Like, I don't remember how I found that record, but like, that's the best record I've heard all year, I think.

And when I keep telling friends about it, I'm not just going, you like Alt Country or you like, you know, this thing.

Like, I'm going out and going like, you really like, like, here's a person who I know who really likes story songs, who really likes like a tale inside the lyrical content.

Right.

But in terms of protest songs, you know, this conversation is reminding me of something that we published just a couple of weeks ago at No Depression.

The associate editor, Meredith Lawrence, had been sort of chasing the story in Brooklyn, New York, where the local sort of like folk, school and theater called Jalopy, um, had been low key hosting, um, Steve Earl to teach songwriting classes, um, for both kids, young people and adults.

Um, and so she thought that that was going to be the story that she would go to Jalopy and she would sit in on some of these classes and, you You know, if she got permission from the kids to, you know, photograph them and interview them, that that would be the story of, wow, what's it like to be a young person learning how to write songs from, you know, an alt country legend type thing.

Turns out that Steve was writing songs.

Um, the question was, I got way off there, but the question was more of like the energies of, that like sort of come through you when you're in that creative process like like i find that it sort of influences whatever that outcome is and when you're in these different areas do you find like different inspiration starts to happen it's like maybe a song you wouldn't write here over there you're feeling that you know

definitely oh yeah even just from listening to random music in a restaurant you know I did this tour with my friends U.S. Rails, Philly, Alt Country, or Americana Collective, Ben Arnold, Scott Bricklin, Tom Gillum, Matt Muir, the drummer.

And then I've done a couple tours with them.

We're going like Germany, Italy, Spain.

and they they've sort of to me feel like they kind of bend the genre oh big time yeah because you don't really how do you put them into a yeah he

started off off being inspired by more punk rock than anything and then yeah the kind of the alt country or whatever but uh yeah but so yeah i have a new ep i'm working on i threw a couple things out singles out already and in september the square root is the title of the ep

But I listened to, on SiriusXM, the Bakersfield Beat, which is Dwight Yoakam's song.

station and it's programmed there's no djs that's just the music just repeats and he has this phrase to talk about the music from bakersfield and he calls it all its limbs and branches and it kind of reminded me max of how we were talking about alt country last year and what does it mean and where does it draw from and so when dwight is talking about all its limbs and branches i'm going to just let you know that he's going to play Ricky Nelson is going to be played, Buck Owens, early Merle Haggard, Linda Ronstadt, Wanda Jackson, and Dwight gets played too.

But then he plays Glen Campbell, the big string section Glen Campbell stuff from the late 60s and early 70s.

That whole album is so good.

What's funny about that, I mentioned Alt Country.

There's this debate in the Alt Country world about who, this is so stupid, who's better, Graham Parsons or the Eagles? How do you judge that? Why is it important? Why not just have a

scale and have four guys rate the songs and then you wouldn't have to argue about it.

This is true.
