All-Star Superman

Yeah.

uh like i said uh almost almost nothing creatively to do with with that or all-star superman which you know as far as reviews and uh people uh taking to it right away was the exact opposite but i can't take any credit for all-star superman

so when you came on board the all-star line and all-star batman in particular had already been conceived the team was in place is that accurate

Yes, but none of it had been started yet.

And there were other All-Stars in the pipe, and there was actually a lot of interesting things, which for a long time you couldn't say, but now they're obviously never going to happen.

But All-Star Superman, after Frank Whiteley, It was going to be three three-issue stories with Grant writing them all, Frank Whiteley not doing any of them.

It was going to be Paul Polk, Richard Corbin, and J.H. Williams.

We're going to do three three-issue series that were only kind of loosely talked about, and Grant always has a bunch of ideas, but that never happened.

And obviously we're, we're gonna get into it more specifically, but I guess big picture, what, what was it that, that you think people, us included [laughs] didn't, quote unquote, "get"? The fact that this was meant to be more of a satire? The fact that Bruce's over-the-top characterization was, was purposeful, and that there was an arc for him to go on? Like, when you say maybe we weren't getting it, I guess what specifically did you have in mind?

Um, well, you know, the whole thing is an essay in misalignments, All-Star Batman [laughs] and Robin, the Boy Wonder, right? It's even got a long title.

Um, you know, not just like, like you, you said, it, it... a lot, a lot of time in between all the issues, a lot of time for it to come out.

I don't think, uh, Frank and Jim, I don't think it's a secret to say that they weren't always aligned.

Uh, and that being said, if you didn't like, another thing but kind of related that I think people maybe don't get if... uh, but, but again, it's not the term I w- I, I necessarily wanna own.

But, uh, Dark...

if you don't like Dark Knight Strikes Again, you're not gonna like All-Star Batman, I think is pretty safe to say.

And then I think it gets peppered in with Jim Lee doing it, and Jim Lee, uh, uh, uh, appealing more towards a core Wednesday crowd and superhero stuff.

And Lex Luthor's like raw, like drive to be the best like he is the american dream like yeah writ large and i there were moments where each felt heroic and each felt villainous in a way that i loved

and it's it the best part of lex being in a more heroic role here and you know he does he still does evil things like after bizarro fails he kills his entire team of scientists just because he's pissed about he's like you know what actually uh lois uh i don't have time for you anymore i gotta solve this uh it's really gonna fucking bug me um I love the notion that the only thing preventing Lex Luthor from being that super genius who can make inventions that benefit humanity is – I'm going to pit Mark Millar against Grant Morrison here – tale as old as time, is exactly what Grant Morrison said in All-Star Superman when Superman tells Lex, you could have saved the world years ago if it mattered to you.

And the only thing keeping him from doing that is the fact that Superman existed.

You put Superman on the opposite side of...

It's on the same shelf as All-Stars Superman.

That's fucking crazy.

I love that sort of like encapsulation of a character trying to hit the beats of what makes that character.

Kind of like what I said about Frank Quitely and Grant Morrison's opening of All-Star Superman, so that's cool.

David continues, "...the word I use to define the different versions of a character is adaptation.

I don't typically get bent out of shape when an adaptation deviates from my personal or headcanon." While I personally didn't care for or like the dark tone of the Snyderverse, I find things or scenes that I like in every adaptation of the characters that I grew up with.
