You have Lucia Santos, who is 10 years old, and her cousins, Francisco Marto, who is nine, and Jacinta Marto, who is only seven.

Illiterate shepherds from the tiny hamlet of Aljustrel.

Their daily reality was just tending sheep in a rocky pasture called the Cova da Iria.

And then in May 1917, they return home with an account that immediately disrupts the precarious peace of their village.

[laughs] No, it's not.

The children lived near the village of Aljustrel, guessing on the pronunciation of that, uh, in the parish of Fatima.

Their families raised sheep, and the children regularly took the animals out to graze.

On May 13th, 1917, they were tending their sheep at a place called Cova da Iria, uh, on land owned by Lucia's family.
