Matthew Taylor stands at his post near the garrison's edge, rifle steady, eyes scanning the scrubland beyond the defences.

The industries are no longer expanding at such a monumental rate.

Work is harder to find, and the system that once absorbed people like him is really beginning to strain.

To help us understand what Matthew's story reveals about this moment at the tail end of the Industrial Revolution in Britain, I'm joined again by historian, author, and broadcaster, Alice Loxton.
