So the fact that they're taking the steel and trying to imitate timber frame using this new material, it's like what they did at Saint-Jean-Bievre, where they were using the steel to elongate the stone columns, and they're using a neoclassical vernacular, but... kind of testing the limits of this new material they're doing the same thing here with the steel frame and wood um and it's really interesting

It also feels like the ornament is very folksy or something.

Like it, it reminds me of, I don't know these, I'm curious about like in the post, like in the new third Republic of France, like how this building represents or doesn't represent a kind of like inherent Frenchness, which given the fact that it's inspired by Alhambra, like, or that it's sort of Orientalist in nature, like maybe it doesn't, but there's something so specific about it.

Story of Cairo-Stanley Lane-Poole

Damascus and Ispahan, Agra and Delhi, Cordova and Granada, Prusa and Constantinople possess elements of beauty and features of style which Cairo has not, and they enlarge and complete our understanding of Arab art.
S
26:36speaker_2NARRATOR
But to view that art in its purity, uncorrupted by the mechanical detail of the Alhambra, unspoiled by the over-elaboration of Delhi, we must study the mosques and tombs of Cairo.
S

The blessed conservatism of the East has happily maintained much of the old city in its beautiful, ruinous, unprogressive disorder.

The disturbance began when En-Nasir's workmen, digging a lake called Nasir's Pool near the Lion's Bridge, west of the Luke and close to the mosque of Tabars, undermined the church of Ez-Zuri, which En-Nasir had commanded to be respected.
A
390:50AvailleNARRATOR
Without the knowledge of the government, the people rushed to the church one Friday after prayers and utterly demolished it.
A
390:58AvailleNARRATOR
Thence they went to the church of St. Mina in the Alhambra and sacked it, and did the like to the Church of the Maidens by the seven water mills, dragging out the nuns and pillaging and burning everything.
A
391:12AvailleNARRATOR
The sultan was indignant when the smoke of the burning churches told the tale of disaster, and sent troops at once to coerce the mob.

A hurried telephone call had assured Pauline that she could see Mrs. Landish directly after lunch, and at two o'clock her motor drove up to Viking Court, which opened on a dilapidated riverfront and was cynically overlooked by tall tenement houses with an underpinning of delicatessen stores.
