Alfred Noyes, the English essayist before his conversion, visited Swinburne at his paternal home in Bonn, Church, England.

Swinburne took him into the library, where Swinburne said he wrote his atheistic poetry.

They began talking about Christianity.

I like to write, should I pursue this? And so after that thought happened, I wrote One Dark Window.

I had always wanted to write a loose retelling of Alfred Noyes' poem, The Highwayman, which was very impactful for me as a young person.

It's a great poem.

It's very short.
