And now between 1912 and early 1914, Pope and Ishii are spending a lot of time together, almost every day, going out shooting the bow and arrow and learning the Yahi ways of the bow and arrow.

In 1914, Waterman, Kroeber, and Pope all get together and they talk about, wouldn't it be wonderful if we could get Ishii and Ishii could take us up into the hill country of where he lived when he was still living as a Stone Age man and let Ishii show us around and let Ishii tell us the stories.

And this is Dr. Kroeber here on the left and this is Ishii on the right.

And Ishii could take us up into those areas and teach us about his ways before he was captured in 1911.

So they convinced Ishii.

And Ishii finally, you know, this is good medicine for me to go back there and visit those sites and tell my story to my new friends.

And they spent months up there doing that.

And Ishii was reliving, but he was also showing Pope Kroeber and Waterman his story during those months.

This, I think, was instilled in her from earliest childhood.

And one of the things that I found out somewhere along the way was that her father A.L. Kroeber knew John Muir served on a committee with him way back in the early years of the 20th century and one of the early references in her science fiction is to a sort of holy book which is Thoreau Taoism which is a combination of Thoreau and Taoism.
