But to cut a long story short.

They frame Alfred Dreyfus because the fact, because he's Jewish and he's the only Jewish officer in the staff office, they know that people will sort of want to believe it.

He is already subject to sort of jealousy.

He is better off, he's related to a family with big industrial holdings in Alsace-Lorraine and he's already sort of, subject of envy.

He was soon given the name of an ideal scapegoat.

Captain Alfred Dreyfus was born into a prosperous Jewish family in Alsace in 1859.

His father, a successful textile manufacturer, moved the family to Switzerland during the Franco-Prussian War.

With Alsace taken by the German Empire, the Dreyfuses eventually settled in Paris, and Alfred decided to pursue a military career.

The drama follows Zola from his early struggles into his emergence as a public voice against injustice, as the case of French Army officer Alfred Dreyfus brings the writer into the Dreyfus affair.

The setting moves through Paris and France in the late 19th century.

And now, we return to the original broadcast.

Dreyfus.

Dreyfus? Here we are.

Alfred Dreyfus.

Look here, gentlemen.

it was Devil's Island just also, yeah, for a little more context on it.

In addition to being a penal colony, it was famous, for instance, housing Alfred Dreyfus of the Dreyfus Affair, the whole spy scandal that rocked 19th century France in the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian War.

It was also the host of a labor colony.

And it was also, indeed, as I just alluded to, a place where political prisoners were often sent.

The reason given was ritual murder.

In Paris in 1894, a French court convicted Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish army captain, of treason on forged evidence and sent him to Devil's Island.

Crowds outside the École Militaire chanted for the death of Jews.

The reason given was disloyalty to the nation.

The question is not rhetorical.

I would like an answer because the people making Piker's argument owe one.

What was the reason they murdered my Jewish family members in Iraq in nineteen forty-one? Was it also a little bit about what the State of Israel that didn't exist back then did? What about the Holocaust? The Inquisition? What about the Hebron massacre of nineteen twenty-nine? The Pittsburgh shooting? If Jewish investment in Israel invites violence against Jews, then the Farhud, Kishinev, Dreyfus, and Damascus need some other explanation.

The violence has a life of its own, and Israel is the current name it answers to.

It is French.

Without this precedent, Dreyfus could not have been condemned.

Of course, Satan has some kind of a case.

It goes without saying.

He does not appear in it as a helper.

I do not know that he helped when England set him free.

Among the twelve sane men of France who have stepped forward, with great Zola at the head, to fight and win, I hope and believe, the battle for the most infamously misused Jew of modern times, Alfred Dreyfus, do you find a great or rich or illustrious Jew helping? In the United States he was created free in the beginning.

He did not need to help, of course.
