Alf Gover

Um, and I first saw Mick or Mike, as they used to call him, on a program on ITV, which you'll be far too young to remember, called Seeing Sport, and it was used to go in children's time, and they used to focus on a different sport every time.

And it was through programs like Seeing Sport that you became familiar with such names as Alf Gover, who used to run-

[laughs]

... used to run the indoor cricket school.

First, I became a professional while I was at school.

Dad sent me when I was 16 to, do you remember old Alf Gover? He had a fantastic old coaching school in Wandsworth.

It was above a petrol station.

And so my 16th birthday present was going to Alf's, who still had very firm connections with Surrey, as we would play.

Your relationship with the game changes.

When you're a professional cricketer, yes, it's a job.

And so there are often times where I wish I was that naive 16-year-old at Alf Govers and just love cricket for what it actually is.

That just total, you know, just devotion.
