Alex Schultz

He had a tone that felt like velvet and voltage, he had phrasing that danced and dipped and stung, and he had a presence that made me lean in because every note sounded like it had been thought about long before it had ever been played.

And that guitarist was Alex Schultz.

I didn't know it then, but that Bluesfest set would be one of the first in a long thread that would weave through my life as a fan, as a broadcaster, and even as a promoter.

Alex became one of those musicians who quietly shaped my understanding, indeed changed my understanding of what blues guitar could be.

Three shows over a couple of years, two of which featured Alex on guitar.

Those gigs are extraordinarily special for me.

Slim was in wonderful voice, the band was razor sharp, and Alex, well, he was Alex Schultz.

Tasteful, soulful, swinging, and absolutely locked into the groove.
