And by June of 25, a second Arizona jury took a mere 44 minutes to convict her in the attempted murder of Brandon Voudreau.

It damaged her ability to speak.

This little girl, who had been shot and had watched her sister die and her brother fall, now had to relearn how to form words.

She had to fight her way back to language itself.

And then, having clawed her way back to speech, Christy Downs walked into a courtroom and used those hard-won words to tell 12 strangers the truth about the night her mother shot her.

She identified Diane, a child who had survived her own mother's attempt to kill her, who'd had to rebuild her ability to speak from the rubble of a stroke, stood up and named the person who did it.

I don't have language strong enough for that kind of courage.

There is nothing I can say that's equal to an eight-year-old finding her voice specifically so she could protect herself and her brother from the woman who tried to erase them both.

And there's one more detail from the trial that tells you everything about the mind we've been examining.

Duncan says there was no indication this email came from Charles.

Charles discovered the email at the end of June 2019 and sent it to Adam Cox, Lori's brother.

Charles then confronted Lori about the email.

Duncan said Charles had no relationship with Daybell at all.
