Alcuin

For some time the relations between the two kings was strained, and an embargo was laid by Charles on English merchants travelling through his kingdom.

But the influence of Alcuin was exercised in favour of peace, and in 795 Charles writes in the friendliest terms to his beloved friend and brother Offa.

As for pilgrims who wish to approach the threshold of the apostles, let them travel in peace without any molestation.

Let merchants pay toll at the accustomed places.

The first of these was the so-called Adoptionist heresy.

This was propounded by a Spanish monk, Felix, Bishop of Urgel, who taught that Jesus Christ was a man who was adopted by God as his son.

Having obtained from the Pope a condemnation of this doctrine, Charles held a series of councils for its condemnation, Alcuin being specially the champion of orthodoxy.

The other was the iconoclastic controversy, in regard to which it was necessary for the Frankish Church to define its position.

The time of his arrival at Barcelona was about Lent of the year 1524, and as he remained there upwards of two years, we do not find him at Alcala until the year 1526.

At the latter place he spent his time in studying the works of Scotus, Albertus, Alcuin, and the master of the sentences.

Was there also something said about that great event toward which, as we know, the course of history was tending, the bestowal of the imperial crown on Charles? Alcuin, born of a noble Anglian family about the year 735, and therefore some seven years older than Charles, was brought up from childhood in the monastic seminary of York, and there drank in with eager lips the learning, deepest and best of its day in all Europe, which that celebrated school imparted to its pupils.

This was also like hotly contested.

Alcuin, the British monk that worked for the Emperor Charlemagne, he actively discouraged Christians preserving any of these early European monuments.

So the fact that it was partially Christianized in a kind of loose way probably contributed to its survival.

One last thing we'll mention is that Beowulf studies, such as they exist, largely don't exist until the early, mid-20th century.

Beowulf as a text worthy of study wasn't really a consideration until a fellow came along named Tolkien and rescued it largely from obscurity.

The poem wasn't considered very good or worthwhile or particularly interesting, much like Alcuin.

His court at Aachen became the center of a revival in scholarship now known as the Carolingian Renaissance.

Charles recruited intellectuals from across Europe, including Alcuin of York, Paul the Deacon from Italy, and Theodulf of Orléans from Visigothic Spain.

Palace and monastic schools trained clergy and administrators.

Scholars corrected biblical and liturgical texts, copied classical works, and promoted clearer Latin.
