Alan Thicke

He was 24 at the time he made the movie.

He's Lenny Slater from the Bronx and, and Alan Thicke plays his dad.

Do you think he knows Spike from Bensonhurst? He probably does.

They're all buddies.

Yeah, from Fun City.

People should check out.

So, yeah, Alan Thicke plays his dad.

Growing Pains Alan Thicke is the dad cop who is...

Yeah.

Alan Thicke's in the background with Orko getting ready to tell these kids about how it's going to be okay.

You don't have to become vampires to deal with your parents' divorce.

Thanks, Alan.

Yeah, so the second broadcast, an actor called Alan Barsman, who I know nothing about, did the narration.

It's a little bit murky about which number broadcast it then turns into somebody else, but certainly by the time it was on cable television, it was narrated by Alan Thicke, I suppose best known as a sitcom and light entertainment star, would that be fair? Programs like Thicke of the Night.

And then for home video and beyond, you have Ringo Starr, bringing it back to the Beatles again.

Ringo, a very good pal of Nilsson.

It's the most readily available version, but we have sampled the other narrators where possible.

It seems that the Alan Barsman version has never surfaced in the collector's sphere.

It's certainly not online anywhere where you can sample, where you can watch the whole thing with Dustin Hoffman or with Alan Thicke.

So let's just play a little sample of these guys side by side.

I was doing a show up at, um, in Kirkland Lake or, uh, Timmins.

Uh, and he, on the way back, I was sitting beside Alan Thicke on the flight.

Crazy.

And I knew about, I was going on Jeopardy and, uh, he said, well, you know, Alex was a good friend of his and to say hi to him and all that.

And I was going to use that as my anecdote, and they didn't allow it because then there was a connection, tenuous as it was, between Alex and me.

So they wouldn't allow me to use the Alan Thicke anecdote.

Oh.

Yeah,

Mm-hmm.

I didn't know Alan Thicke sang.

Yeah.

I didn't know that either.

Me neither.

Yeah, Alan Thicke, he did themes and everything.

Albums, he did a whole shebang.

I did not know that.

Well, it turns out that Anthony and, and this is in their book and the, and actually you can, and you can see the coffee cups.

If you go to YouTube, uh, and find the Alan Thicke show, if anybody remembers Alan Thicke, and the Chili Peppers.

And on that show, they come barreling out, and they're both, Anthony and Flea, are both wearing the exact same jackets and both have the exact same set of coffee cups on their shoulders.

And, well, it turns out that they had gotten an argument in Europe and and they you know they weren't talking to each other and flea felt bad about it and he was in a market somewhere in europe and he saw these coffee cups for sale and he just thought they were the greatest thing in the world and he bought himself a pair of the coffee cups and he bought a pair of the coffee cups for anthony And he went and he presented them to Anthony, and he apologized and said, you know, you're my brother, and now I'm giving you these, and we are now the Brothers Cup, they called themselves, the Brothers Cup.

And just to your point, that video does exist on YouTube.

If any of our listeners want to check it out, just type in Red Hot Chili Peppers 1984.

It's called The Thick of the Night, Alan Thicke's show at the time from Los Angeles.

And you'll see them both wearing the jackets with the cups that Mike is describing pretty well.
