So in the 1970s when I was at medical school, there was a wonderful rheumatologist there called Alan Ebringer, and his special interest was ankylosing spondylitis.

Now, ankylosing spondylitis is an inflammatory condition of the spine where you get bony ankylosis.

You know, um, there's so much inflammation there, you get all this calcium laid down, you end up with, well, obviously pain and a very stiff spine.
