Air gap

We do, actually.

Well, we have some larger customers with on-prem installations and AirGap and all that other fun stuff.

We have a chunk of customers in the Azure cloud.

So, our...

That was ransomware.

So suddenly you needed to think different, not only having the backup and recover, because those people also try to attack your backups all the time, which is why we came up with certain rules, like you need to have different backups in different places, even AirGap.

But that really made it already very different because now you needed to put a wrapper around all of your data, hardware assets and wherever the data was.

And that wrapper meant we need to make sure that there's no access to your systems from the outside world.

Because we may have missed something.

Taking you back to your Air Force days, one thing I'd love for you to comment on is air gapping.

Sure.

You know, so there's this idea where people just make a blanket statement.

It can be accredited.

It deploys on your terms, so whether you're AirGap, GovCloud, Commercial Cloud, same code base, same data model, and then again, no vendor lock, period.

So you have full control of your roadmap, your data, and your infrastructure.

All right, so.

So if you don't want to trust the Frostnap backup, the Frostnap 4, it's called backup tool or re-aggregation tool, then you can one-shot your own.

And then, yeah, it'd probably be a matter of doing that on an AirGap laptop.

things that we are looking into to sort of make that maybe a less manual process at the moment is whether we can get that as sort of an option for recovery in Sparrow Wallet.

Not that we've yet discussed this with Craig Raw, but we envision that would be a very handy way because people have a lot of respect for Craig Raw and Sparrow Wallet and expect it to be around for a long time.

And then the other one, that we do have a working proof of concept for is in SeedSigner, in the SeedSigner project as well.

So you could flash a custom version of SeedSigner rather than doing it on an AirGap laptop.

do you expect that because it's non-standard the seed word the seed phrases do you expect that there'll be some adoption over time i mean this frost protocol could it be easily incorporated can you see a future where those um existing hardware wallet manufacturers or new ones coming online would see what you guys are doing and be like actually that's really clever and smart we should incorporate that and then you become sort of power in numbers and it becomes that that trust mitigation or that trust gets mitigated somewhat

yeah i mean in my opinion it's like frost is the the benefits of frost are so overwhelming that like that is the obvious future for hardware um right in my opinion it's just the question is the timeline right and um i think it will still be uh some years and the reason for that is it is quite a fundamental um change um to how hardware will operate um so because it's an interactive security protocol uh and you know like a number of uh of the existing hardware world manufacturers for example they insist on things like air gapping uh and we believe that air gapping is a bit of a larp um uh and you know we tried to demonstrate without with something like the dark skippy attempt But the one thing you give up with air gapping, or you don't necessarily give up, but it's impractical to really do, it becomes impractical, is you're no longer able to really effectively do interactive security protocols.

A lot of times in the industry, we hear this term called an air gap.

Usually, it comes out in the context of a security conversation.

Like, hey, we have this really important sensitive data.

We need to isolate it completely from the network.

Let's put it in an air gap.

Now, Eric and I, we've had this conversation many times over the years, and we've kind of both landed on the side of the argument that most air gaps aren't really an air gap because of a number of various issues, usually having to do with management and patching and just general operational discipline and managing an air gap and a lot of other things.
