Ahamkara

Jal Tanmatra, Air Tanmatra and so on.

The word Aham means Ahankara.

Mahan means Mehat Tatva.

So if you remember Sankhya Karika, there four types of elements are described.

Some are Prakriti, some are Vikriti, some are both Prakriti and Vikriti, and some are neither Prakriti nor Vikriti.

So Prakriti is Prakriti, means he is cause of something.

Then Mahatattva, Ahankara and Tanmatra, these seven, they are both Prakriti and Vikriti.

So they are Vikriti of the previous one and Prakriti of the next one.

So where does ahankara fit into all this? Ahankara is not a kosha.

It's not a sheath.

Ahankara is that which identifies all those sheaths and all their functions as 'I'.

Ahankara means aham vritti is there.

That's your svarupa.

You know, when you talk about the prana, tejas and vishwa, and those are the three deities called buddhi vrittis of the three prakriti gunas and jagrat, swapna, and sushupti.

But then in sushupti, we said, ahankara is gone, ahankara is not there.

Then above ahankara is, uh, buddhi is there or how could buddhi be above ahankara? We see that mahat which is considered as a, above the ahankara.

Yeah, mahat is also sometimes called buddhi tattva.
