Agricultural experiment station

It was one of the first of the landmarks discovered by Captain Cook when he sailed through these waters in 1776.

On the hill, at one side of the town, was the site of the Baranoff Castle, where the Russian governor lived, and there today is the headquarters of the Agricultural Experiment Station.

To the left of the cliffs, at the entrance of the harbor, are the wharves, with the main business street, named after President Lincoln, running back from them, and farther down the cove is a long row of two- and three-story houses, with many flagstaffs rising above them.

That is the Indian settlement.

Mangum's Terraces, like the thousands of miles of terraces that would come after, were built for the purpose of cutting down on erosion and conserving the moisture and dirt on sloping hillside fields.

Near the end of the 19th century, the Agricultural Experiment Station at the university now known as North Carolina State published a bulletin instructing farmers on building Mangum Terraces.

And within a few years, the USDA was promoting terraces for farmers everywhere on unlevel ground susceptible to erosion.

The Terrace and Craze caught on in a few places in the Missouri and Arkansas Ozarks in the 1920s.
