But when, um, 'cause I did my, uh, hairdressing at London College of Fashion, so really you do, you work on all hair types.

And the Afro hair at the time was o- only optional for me to do Afro hair.

So I took the Afro hair bit, 'cause obviously I thought I wanna know how to do my own hair, much less anybody else's.

So, and that's it.

But I can do European hair.

Nice.

So I can do all hair types.

It's just that a lot of the salons that I worked in specialized in Afro hair, and I wanted to touch base with Afro hair.

And there are darker skin children.

There are children with Afro texture hair who are not getting the same positive attention.

And it often is the opposite where they are more likely to get the negative attention.

They're more likely to be scapegoated or blamed.

You can't act like, well, you didn't know or you didn't notice or you didn't realize.

So it's something, sister, that I've been walking with a very long time since my mom, you know, straightened out my very first Afro puff, you know, and me going to school with very proud Afro puffs and then coming home after a series of comments from other black girls and also non-black girls and saying, I don't ever want to wear my hair that way again.

And I didn't understand why I was processing that that way, but I did.

And so it's an incredible honor to work on it now, this kind of material.

And then I just want to give a shout out to Blade.

Blade, starring Wesley Snipes, is not a play.

Come on, yes! But when I tell you, no, when I tell you, I was like, they don't let this black man kill all these white vampires and talk about it and be in a leather suit with an Afro fade.

I was growing up in Chicago at the time, and I remember watching that VHS on the south side of Chicago, and I was in my grandmother's room like, is the police going to come in right now? Blade.

You know what I mean? Representing the 215.

You know what I mean? Uh, he's about to put his press love Afro on and play the drums.

You know what I'm saying? [laughs]

And because of that, it ended his career because he couldn't run in a straight line anymore.

And that comes up multiple times.

And he's even like, I just can't walk straight anymore after she hit me with the Afro pick.

Yeah, because she was drunk and angry and belligerent.

and like it's hard to talk about this movie because it is like a documentary in a way where it's very like scene for scene like okay here's a little bit of her past and you go through it but what ties it all together is it's like days before her uh comeback concert that's what we're building up to is this comeback for her but everything for this concert is going absolutely wrong because they cannot afford anything and there's even a union that uh that you know that is a about to quit because of that and then her like hairdresser and costume person she she ends up leaving uh or sorry he ends up leaving and i think he's uh she steals her dress and like while she's leaving she like rips it off of her right

Yeah.

Well, that's because I also wanted to wear my little, uh, Afro puff, um, hair band.

Like, it's a cute little hair band, and it's got, like, Black girls on it with, like, different kind of puffs.

Uh-huh.

Well, the next thing I'll do before that is get the tats out and do like a skin fade, but then keep it larger.

Oh, like an Afro mohawk.

But also don't want to look like an ice gem on top.
