You went as professor of aeronautics? I

went, I went as professor of aerodynamics and they changed it to aerospace engineering because the Manchester Department was actually originally in the Department of Mathematics.

It was set up by James Lighthill in order to provide experimental information for their mathematical exercises.

And so it was called initially the Department of the Mechanics of Fluids, which sounds very nice, doesn't it? But by the time I got there, it had morphed into Aerospace Engineering because that attracted better students.

So I took this on as a department to develop as an Aerospace Engineering department.

And a very good one it was too, I have to say.

You know, I had a fantastic crew of people.

And I was lucky enough to be taken on board as the aeroplane person.

So I was looking into a bit of an interesting background for what you do.

So you spend your PhD at Queen's optimizing acoustic properties and aerospace engineering.

Am I right in saying that?

Yeah, that's basically it is optimizing aircraft noise and vibration.
