Aeneas of Gaza

Beirut was the center of legal studies during the Byzantine period.

And when the emperor Justinian closed the Great Academy of Athens in 529 AD, The Gazan writer Aeneas claimed that its exiled teachers made their way to Gaza.

So the Academy of Athens moves to Gaza in the 6th century.

The school of rhetoric founded in Byzantine Gaza had its own college building backing onto the public baths.
