MezHOST
15:20
This guy made Buddy.
MezHOST
15:22
This guy did, uh, Yule Log, Adult Swim Yule Log.
MezHOST
15:25
So I'm-

Too Many Cooks
Jeannie NovakHOST
8:27
And that's a folk horror film we saw, we loved, starring Nicolas Cage and Andrea Risborough.
Jeannie NovakHOST
8:33
He created, wrote, and directed two specials that were on Adult Swim called Adult Swim Yule Log from 2022 and Adult Swim Yule Log 2, Branching Out.
Jeannie NovakHOST
8:45
from 2020 we gotta check those during christmas okay we will these are on our christmas horror list because they basically start out as typical ambient fireplace videos and morph into horror films so this is perfect for us they
Luis LevyHOST
8:58
better be on my christmas sock
Casper KellyGUEST

Adult Swim doesn't make movies usually, but this was kind of a hook that they would like.
Casper KellyGUEST
12:42
The first one was called Adult Swim Yule Log, and we didn't explain anything.
Casper KellyGUEST
12:47
It's just a yule log you put on in the background, and then all of a sudden a door opens, and we see, as we have a close-up on a yule log, we see legs walking in front of it and a couple arguing, and then it becomes a horror movie.
Casper KellyGUEST
13:00
And so the idea was you would put it on at a party or something, and then you would suddenly look over there and go, what the hell is going on over there? And that did well, and we actually did a sequel.
Casper KellyGUEST
13:09
for it called Adult Swim Yule Log 2 Branching Out.
Casper KellyGUEST
13:12
So those two weird movies.
Casper KellyGUEST
13:15
And then I had also, I got lucky that, and this just before we shot Buddy, I got to shoot a segment of the VHS franchise for VHS Halloween.
Taylor NigrelliHOST
71:38
Here's one for the horror sickos.
Taylor NigrelliHOST
71:40
Buddy from the creator of Too Many Cooks and also the Adult Swim Yule Log.
Taylor NigrelliHOST
71:47
So Buddy, if you're interested in that.
Taylor NigrelliHOST
71:49
It's not great, but it's pretty spooky sometimes.
Alonso DuraldeHOST
5:56
... which I still haven't seen.
Alonso DuraldeHOST
5:58
Uh, I think still his most successful one is probably the second Adult Swim Yule Log, which is-
Christy LemireHOST
6:04
Oh
Alonso DuraldeHOST
6:04
... a parody of Hallmark movies that sort of- ... operates in the world of showing how easy the tipping point is between the setup of a Hallmark movie and the setup of a horror movie.
Alonso DuraldeHOST
30:15
... which went viral, and was a thing that sort of took innocuous '90s television and then turned it into this, like, nightmarish David Lynch hellscape.
Alonso DuraldeHOST
30:23
Um, and then he did the two Adult Swim Yule Log movies, um, the first of which starts out as a traditional sort of televised Yule log, and then becomes a fireplace POV slasher movie.
Kevin AveryHOST
30:35
[laughs]
Alonso DuraldeHOST
30:35
And then the sequel-
Drea ClarkHOST
33:14
Um, so I, I, and I was kind of forgiving those with, oh, this must be his first time building this out more, but.
Alonso DuraldeHOST
33:22
Yeah, I, I think, my impression so far is he has really great ideas, and he takes them to interesting places, but then he kind of runs out of steam or decides not to dig further into certain aspects of the world he's created, not to mention certain implications of what he's even saying about the world he's created.
Alonso DuraldeHOST
33:43
I mean, oddly enough I would say of all the stuff that he's made, the one that to me feels the most successful is Adult Swim Yule Log 2, because at least I think he really carries it all the way to the end of the story, and he kinda keeps us guessing about things along the way.
Drea ClarkHOST
33:57
Mm-hmm.
Ronin JamesHOST
7:12
Yeah.
Ronin JamesHOST
7:13
Casper Kelly also did, if you are familiar with the Adult Swim feature, Yule Log.
Ronin JamesHOST
7:20
that came out a couple years ago it was a very experimental weird kind of thing where uh it was from the point of view of a fireplace and it starts off with like you think you're watching one of those fireplace videos that you put on to just have the fireplace in the background and it turns into like this crazy murder chaos thing going on all around it i never saw it um yeah it's uh it's interesting very creative so yeah knowing what he had done before uh and that this was you know the direction this whole barney killer barney idea um yeah everybody was pretty pretty eager for this one this was one of the things i was looking forward to this year one of the movies i was really excited for and uh it delivered I felt like it really delivered.
Steph InfectionHOST
8:17
Yeah, it was a lot of fun.
Ronin JamesHOST
11:27
So, yeah, he likes his kind of creepy creatures.
Ronin JamesHOST
11:31
So, yeah.
Ronin JamesHOST
11:35
Casper has written Adult Swim Yule Log.
Ronin JamesHOST
11:40
He did the Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell the cartoon.
ToddHOST
0:49
So we were very excited to see him finally getting a shot at a feature length film, which is his first one of those.
ToddHOST
0:57
Although I did see he made this thing called Yule Log with Adult Swim and Yule Log 2, which I always thought were just shorts, like too many cooks.
ToddHOST
1:06
And they're both an hour and a half long.
BeccaHOST
1:08
Yeah, I had no idea.
