Adriano Espaillat

My guest today is the Democratic nominee for Congress in the 13th District of New York, Daria-Liza Avila-Chevalier.

In June, Daria-Liza burst onto the national stage when she won her primary against five-term incumbent Representative Adriano Espaillat, and along with several other candidates this cycle, became emblematic of a new swell of progressivism in America.

Almost immediately, she came under fire for inflammatory posts she had made on the internet about defunding the police, abolishing prisons, and about Israel's actions in Gaza and the West Bank.

She has what many would characterize as some pretty radical views.

And so that's why it took me so long to give them a yes.

I want

to know, in your mind, how did you win? Because beyond grassroots organizing, Moving out an incumbent like Adriano Espaillat in Harlem is no mean feat.

In the clearest possible terms, how do you think you did it?

And it's really to hide the fact that these candidates, these members of Congress, are getting money from AIPAC.

Adriano Espaillat did the same thing, as did Diana DeGette, against both Darlisa Villachivalie and Melak Kiros, and they fucking lost.

Yeah.

So I think, you know, what we are seeing is once again, the cavalry trying to come in and save someone who already got second place in the primary against my bang and is also funneling $7 million of her own wealth into this campaign because she has made not only $34 million off inside stock trading, but has also made about a billion dollars off the fact that her husband just sold his very large energy company to BlackRock.

Those are both people who have organizing movement backgrounds.

We interviewed Daria Lisa from New York, who won that race against Espaillat, and she's already upset Zora Mamdani by calling for Commissioner Tisch to step down in New York City.

I think She's going to be a noisy member of Congress who's not afraid to leverage power.

I think that's actually going to be true across the board.

... is the candidate who ran in a primary against Representative Adriano Espaillat for that upper Manhattan and Bronx district, um, and defeated him in the primary.

Doesn't face a very particularly strong challenger at the general election, so, um, we could talk about that, uh, kind of future-

Now, outside the hospital where Oscar is being treated, a few hundred New Yorkers gathered to protest ICE and the shooting of one of their neighbors.
