Adrian Autry

I think it was a good decision by Villanova.

I think it's always so tricky when programs have kind of these coaches in waiting for legendary coaches, like obviously Neptune was for Jay Wright and like Red Autry for Syracuse, for example.

And I think it's tough because you obviously hope that that coach can kind of carry the same tradition, but also the same recruit similarly.

And, you know, coach X's and O's similarly, and sometimes it works out, but often it doesn't.

I'm a really big fan of Jerry McNamara.

And I'll tell you, and I've always been a fan of Jerry Mac, but I was even more of a fan on how he handled his press conference and when he talked about a guy I love, uh, in Adrian Autry.

Mm-hmm.

And, a- and, and the manner in which the respect he had for him and, and, and the words that he said.

I'm not sure, you know, Jared, uh, will do that.

I'm not sure they have that many guys, but, but yeah, he's a good player.

Okay, you just mentioned Ryan Odom, who I know worked for you at Virginia Tech, and earlier we were talking about Adrian Autry, who also worked for you at Virginia Tech.

Adrian is now at Virginia working for Ryan.

They did not do a national search.

They immediately appointed Adrian Autry as the head coach, and we saw how that turned out.

We wanted Syracuse to do an overall search.

In the case of Jerry McNamara, they wanted to go maybe outside the family, at least some people.

A lot has changed.

You know, Adrian Autry let go after last season.

Jerry McNamara, Syracuse legend, former Syracuse player, former Syracuse coach, is brought in after two years at Siena.

So we have a new head coach, new coaching staff, and basically a brand-new team.

Yeah.

I mean, I think that during the Jim Boeheim era, I think guys were involved in practice too.

Like we didn't go to many Adrian Autry practices, so I don't, I have no idea what happened to those practices, but like during, you know, we went to a lot of Jim Boeheim practices and the assistants had, you know, they talked to guys too during that time.

I mean, I think Jim was, and I think this is the same with Jerry, like Jerry's the boss once the practice starts, like once they officially start, but everybody else has their own little roles.

Carolina went from Roy Williams to Hubert Davis.

didn't go quite the same, right? Syracuse tried to hand it off to a longtime assistant, and Red Autry didn't necessarily work the same.

Villanova tried to hand it off to the guy that had gone to Fordham, Kyle Neptune, who'd been on Jay Wright's staff for a while.

Yeah.

I've been to a couple practices.

You, sir, have spent, I mean, serious time with some of this Virginia staff in terms of Adrian Autry and Ryan Odom and others.

You got to go to practice.

You got to see these guys.

And we've got two ADs that are now gone that just keep piling on bad coaching.

And even Adrian Autry, what was the, was the eight.

And he was bad.

Now he retired.

Year one, he needs more time.

Year two, I mean, we did it with Adrian Autry.

He needs more time.

Okay, fine.

Orange have not been in the NCAA tournament since that 2016 run under Buddy Boeheim.

Red Autry, three years the head coach at Syracuse.

He has obviously been removed.

He's at Virginia right now.

You bring a guy that in this era, um, you know, having a, a familiar face there is very important, especially when, um, you're starting, you know, moving along in the journey from the previous coach.

And Adrian Autry, um, you know, they thought that he was the guy for them, and unfortunately things didn't work out.

So, uh, they're keeping it in-house and bringing him in.

I mean, he's a legend.
