Adar

Today, we're continuing our journey through Middle-Earth with Episodes 3 and 4 of Season 1 of The Lord of the Rings, The Rings of Power, which is, of course, based on the appendix of The Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Episode three is titled Adar, written by Jason Cahill and Justin Doble.

And the fourth episode is titled The Great Wave, written by Stephanie Folsom, J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, with both episodes being directed by Wayne Chi Yip.

Hopefully I'm saying that correctly and apologies if I did not.

Yeah.

For me, it's kind of interesting watching this a second time, having seen the whole show and knowing a lot of where this goes, because I think for me, the show actually works much better.

On the second time through, now that I know all the answers to the mystery boxes, because they add yet another mystery box in this episode, which we'll talk about, but it's the Adar of it all.

So there's tons of these questions of like, who is Sauron? Where is Sauron? Who's the stranger? Who is Adar? Are either of them Sauron? Like all of this stuff.

they do feel things quite differently and it's always been the thing between men elves and dwarves and on how emotion time etc passes and interpreted but I think it's not always like necessarily a super negative emotion because there was quite a lot of focus on it you can be jealous of all the time that he's missed or wasted or lost with Galadriel and his people and obviously the world has gone on without him whilst he's been MIA in Alcatraz prison somewhere and we're looking forward to how the show add depth to his character as they do with all the others in the show it just makes them a lot more compelling and I think for a viewer that can be really really interesting and depending what he's been through those type of emotions are normal you can go through trauma you can lose someone or you can lose your friends in battle it's not a two-dimensional emotion there's a lot of depth behind it and it doesn't necessarily a word like jealousy doesn't necessarily mean green-eyed monster it's just you can be happy for someone but be a bit envious that you weren't there at the time and experience it with them Because I think as well in the interview, I think he mentioned that a lot of the characters in the show are changed and that's because they can demonstrate forgiveness and are given an opportunity to do so.

And I think we've seen that between Elrond and Galadriel, more prominently between Galadriel and Adar.

So when we get that between Galadriel and Celeborn, I think that'll be really interesting.

We can have a look and go, oh, this is familiar to...

X, Y, Z.

Like the first line when Diogo hails Sauron, it's a parallel to what Adar says to Sauron in the season two prologue.

So like...

Very reminiscent of the seed planting rituals that we saw before the battle from Season 1.

And let us remember that we saw both Arondir and Adar using this same ritual.

Right.

Which really, for me, reaffirmed Adar's connection to Elvish culture.

Absolutely, yes.

Uh, and I think it's rather a lovely ritual, don't you think? Um, so if it's like a memorial ritual, what you're doing is you are, uh, recognizing, affirming, memorializing the dead by planting life.

And it is a creation of Payne and McKay, so they can, you know, put it pretty much wherever they want to in terms of when it starts.
