Then I started thinking, if you need to treat 40 people with this digital intervention to get people to start taking a medication that itself has a numbers needed to treat of about 25, does that mean that there's a numbers needed to treat of 1,000 for a text message saying, "Please go get your statins," to prevent one probably low-level cardiovascular event? And then I thought about the cost of a text message.

I don't know if your practice is paying for texting patients or if you've still got some higher level funding where you are, but where I am, we use Accurx, and the cost of a text is roughly 2.3 pence per fragment.

A fragment is about 150 or so characters, and if you use all of the space on a text message, that's four fragments or about nine pence, which means that long text messages add up in cost really quickly if you're sending them to all of your registered patients or if you're selecting groups like people who don't wanna take statins, but sending them regularly to try and encourage them, or if you're just sending it to all of the groups that we have because we have so many different ways to group our patients.
