Absolute Beginners

The film was to have a screenplay written by Brown, Terrence E. McNally, and Charlie Coffey.

The film was originally slated to go into production in 1986, but the studio lost confidence in the project when director Julie Temple's previous film, Absolute Beginners, proved to be a dismal box office failure.

principal photography was finally underway in 1987 temple brought her his own ideas to the project including peppering the background with then modern sounding pop songs featuring and homage to the nutty professor and using media personalities argyle in a brief cameo the finished print of the film has very several very positive reviews which captured the interest of potential distributors but ultimately Vestron Pictures acquired the distribution rights.

And if you're, like, a film buff, a film geek, and you know these points of reference, you know, right off the bat, like, this is like crack to you [laughs] because you're like, "Oh my God, he's shooting an, a, a, a eight-minute long continuous take while his characters discuss the greatest continuous takes [laughs] in film history," right? But the funny thing, though, the funniest joke o- of this all, and I feel like this doesn't get talked about as much as, as just the, the self-referential take part of it, is that the kid that Fred Ward's walking around with, he's, he's conversing with, uh, the studio security head by referencing European films, international films that do the same thing.

And of course, the American studio security chief, one of the, one of the big guys on campus here at this big Hollywood studio, doesn't know...

He's never heard of Absolute Beginners.

He doesn't know anything about [laughs] these foreign films, which makes this whole visual and verbal gag funnier because Altman is commenting both on Hollywood eating itself and also on Hollywood's shortcomings when it has to do with being cultured beyond its own echo chamber.

The Player is a film about unresponsive studio executives.
