Abin Sur

Kind of went back.

probably the key issues and we're reading stuff and thought this energy um this energy twin thing uh was something worth exploring uh and so for me like reading this I'm like oh I guess the show actually kind of got it right um so from there the Guardians don't know anything about Hal Jordan they just know that Abin Sur picked this guy to be a Green Lantern And so just now they're getting around to being like, how did this happen? And so basically the energy twin, the hologram, tells the Guardians the whole story of Abin Sur, which I believe is taken directly from Showcase 22.

I believe these panels are lifted from Showcase 22.

And basically what it says in this one is that Abin Sur basically bounced off an ion storm that was yellow.

I mean, we'll get to that point in a second because they tell two different sides of the story.

This is from Abin Sur's side of the story and then how Jordan sort of fills in the rest.

Like basically as soon as Abin Sur reached out to find someone who was without fear and they said several times without fear, they don't get into the whole to overcome great fear like a lot of people were complaining about the series that started in the jeff johns era these guys were digging back to the beginning of green lantern one where basically you have to be fearless that's one of the two caveats of being a green lantern the second is being honest so those are the two those are the two requirements to be a green lantern So the show is kind of basically going with this type of origin story where the ring

just asks you, are you afraid? So basically,

Hal Jordan is a test pilot who witnesses his father Martin die in an aircraft crash.

Years later, Hal is summoned to the wreckage of a spaceship belonging to the alien Abin Sur, a dying member of the Green Lantern Corps.

Hal inherits Abin's power ring and responsibility for protecting Earth's sector of space, becoming one of the Corps' leading members and fighting alongside the Justice League.

Hal's ring channels willpower into hard light constructs allowing him to create weapons, tools, and protective barriers.

Right, and we also did a duel between Guy Gardner and Gorr the God Butcher.

Guy Gardner was in the Superman movie, he's also in this season.

Guy Gardner was another possible successor to Abin Sur, but Hal Jordan was closer when the dying alien needed a replacement.

Guy eventually becomes the Green Lantern himself, earning a reputation for being abrasive, hot-headed, and willing to defy authority, while still putting himself on the line to protect others.

Apparently Zoe was the only one that like survived, ended up on Earth.

Abin Sur followed her to Earth.

He protected her, but because of the Manhunter's nature to survive or something, it, uh, she ended up killing Abin Sur because that's her nature.

That's kind of the, the whole nature versus nurture thing.

I'm actually fine with all that.

I think that like a deep problem with the writing is telling and not showing.

And I'm not saying they should've shown us a flashback of Abin Sur necessarily, but like if you were coming to this super cold, you have a hard time remembering who Abin Sur even is in the way that they talk about him.

If you're a fanboy you know right away, but like it's very much a lo- like, like when J'onn's like, "You killed Abin Sur," to me I'm like, you know, how much would a mainstream viewer register with that as important? That's, that's...

Even worse.

Anyways, a point that I thought we were kind of heading towards there is we were talking about Abinsur with why he potentially saved Zoe and why John lets Noah live.

And what was striking to me, and when you say the phrase humanity these days, it kind I guess it depends on where you stand in this country, but the definition I prefer to use with regards to humanity is moralistic care, I guess, is kind of how I was kind of feeling with it.

Um, the difference between, you know, in, in, in very stark comic book sense, um, being, you know, a murderer of worlds versus, um, trying to find your man, humanity to be, um, like a human being on earth and, um, um we don't know why abin sir tried positive that they didn't define why abin sir was trying to save zoe well

Yeah.

It's also, it was also interesting the parallels between Hal and Abin Sur.

Uh, Abin Sur dies trying to protect Zoe.

And we can now assume, and, and-

Because she, uh, and, and-

Excuse me, Nebraska.

Even worse.

Um, anyways, uh, I, uh, a point that I thought, um, we were kind of heading towards there is, is we were talking about, um, Abin Sur with why he potentially saved Zoe and, and, um, why J'onn lets Noah live.

This is some decent-sized spoilers for the comics, as it's the only way to dis- discuss this topic.

Abin Sur, yes that Abin Sur, the one who died and passed his ring to Hal, created this tribe as a way to reform criminals.

At the point in time, his goal...

At the point in time, his goal was to create, to create indigo rings of compassion to place on the guardians, that way he could get them to see things through a more empathetic lens.

The, yeah, I think that was a good, um, summary of who they are, where they came from.

Okay.

I will say that, um, the, the planet that Abin Sur went to, um, you, he, they were being enslaved, the people who made the, the, the rings themselves.

So he, he, you know, there was a, I forgot, I think it's planet Nok.

His test pilot dad dies in a crash, crash.

He finds Abin Sur, gets the ring, and then he becomes a space cop.

It's, he, none of his stuff is on Earth.

There, there's a, a bunch of storylines, and they're great storylines of him being more grounded like, uh, him and Green Arrow and the Hard Road Heroes, that whole thing from the '70s.
