Music to My Heart was released in 1968 on ABC Records with a song written by a guy called Gary Knight.

It's got that beautiful late 60s American soul sound.

It's polished, it's melodic and it's sophisticated.

Before that, The Tams, Hey Girl, Don't Bother Me.

A bit of a northern soul classic released on ABC Paramount.

The Tams were called The Tams because they wore these hats very similar to berets or of a Scottish origin called tams.

It was their, their shtick, but they didn't really need one.

You can listen to the songs I Thought You Were Mine, Love That Really Counts, Try Love Again, and Can This Be Real? This group originated in Oakland, California in the US, known for the genres rhythm and blues, soul, funk, doo-wop, and also some rock and roll.

Been active from 1967 to 1976, working for the labels Boola Boola, Chess Records, ABC Records, Cartom, and also Sequel.

The members, past members, Al Bodin or Bowden, Chris James, Alain Richardson, Daryl Kennedy, Delmos Wheatley, John January, and Steve Stripling.

Really nice group.

He had the same perfectionist tendencies as Walter and Donald and believed that they were the ones who needed to record their own songs.

Gary moved west to L.A. for a job at ABC Records as an A&R man.

His job was to sign new underground artists to the label.

Gary's first acquisition at AB&C was Walter and Donald.

The pair moved out to L.A. and were hired first as staff songwriters for ABC as that was what their supposed experience was in New York.

It was partially a ruse just to start their own band as they never sold a song in L.A. for similar reasons to their lack of success in New York.

Instead, they formed a band and rehearsed at ABC Records after hours.

Their first record, Can't Buy a Thrill, produced three hits, Dirty Work, Do It Again, and Reeling in the Ears.

Well, I think 1979 was when my mom finished her contract with Warner Brothers.

She was signed to, uh, ABC Records, which is Impulse Records, and then, uh, and then through the '70s she, she made a bunch of records for Warner Brothers.

But when that contract ended, she never signed another one again.

[laughs] And I think that was her, her time, um, you know, where she said, "I'm gonna shift here," and, and, and moved s- completely into the spiritual path, you know.

And as we started working on the record, uh, I got to know Walter and Donald a little bit, and afterwards they said, "You know, we've never heard anybody play guitar [laughs] quite like that." I said, "Well, gentlemen, I've never heard music like this." And so there was this sort of, okay, whoever gets their nose under the tent, uh, calls everybody else and, and will form a band.

So Becker and Fagen managed to get a publishing deal through Gary Katz with ABC Records in Los Angeles, and I was already moving out there to play with other bands anyway.

Was playing pedal steel, actually was working at the Palomino Club, um, and doing session work and guitar repair out in, um, in Los Angeles.

And somehow or other, after they got the publishing deal, we thought about putting together a band, and that's how it, that's how it happened.
