ABC No Rio

I know personally, I got over that pretty early when I was a huge fan of all things New York, right? New York is the huge epicenter of creativity, especially within this world.

And there was that push and pull between the ABC No Rio crowd and sort of collective of bands and the more traditional CBGB's New York hardcore bands.

And so you had like the sick of it all versus born again stuff happening and things like that at the time.

All I saw was just great music coming from creative people on different sides of the city.

That was by Freddie Alva, very well known on the New York hardcore scene.

I think he ran ABC Rio for a bunch of years into the 90s.

And he's just a general like historian of hardcore, specifically New York hardcore.

That's where he's from.

Was that part of you kinda leaning towards other types of music? Was...

'Cause I just mean, like, historically, like, you look at DC, you look at New York City with ABC No Rio.

Like, a lot of the people that are going towards these more melodic genres and parts of punk rock and hardcore that would be taken up as being emo, it's because of how violent things were getting and how untenable that scene was getting in their eyes, and I was wondering if that was at all a factor in you.

Not for me, no.

There was the squats.

I used to love the squats there, like ABC No Rio.

And then there was C Squat, which is still there on Avenue C.

That hosted a lot of punk and hardcore shows from the time.
