A Silent Voice

My second choice, um, this is another series we've discussed on and off a couple of times, uh, throughout this podcast but never dedicated an episode to it, um, 'cause I feel like we'd probably kill each other.

It is A Silent Voice by Yoshitoki Ōima, uh, who's also known for To Your Eternity.

I read the manga for this fully.

I read it weekly as it came out, um, in Weekly Shonen Magazine, and I've, uh, really enjoyed it.

And, uh, uh, the- to me, uh, the, the, the manga is much more than the two main characters.

Uh, it's, it's, it's the, the supporting characters and the other stories, uh, especially Yuzuru, are important, and they deserved not to be written out of the story, uh, pr- almost entirely, which is what happened in the anime.

And I understand that, you know, when you're talking about a movie, even for a relatively short manga like, A Silent Voice, seven volumes is still a lot to get into, into one movie.

So yes, there were decisions, there were choices that had to be made.

But again, shout out to the creative team, Studio Science SARU, knocking it out the park.

Uh, the chief director, uh, Naoko, uh, Yamada, who was behind, um, some very good, um, classic, I don't wanna say classic, but very, very, like, dramatized, uh, movies and stuffs like Silent Voice, uh, the Haiki story.

She brings the, that over.

Um, and then she teams up with one of the directors from, uh, season two of Dan Da Dan, and also played a part in the Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, so Abel-

worry regardless but chainsaw man has become one of the most popular and modern shonen series of all time with top-notch production from mappa and a talented team involved in various departments of the anime one team that doesn't get much appreciation for the development of an anime or any entertainment series is the sound department Kensuke Ushio, being the main composer for the anime, also only gained recognition for his work after the viral pool scene where his perfect music score elevated the scene in the recent Chainsaw Man film.

Since then, fans have come to recognize Kensuke's work, which includes other major titles such as A Silent Voice and Don De Don as well.

that's a pretty good track record

in his interview after ushio explained that he envisions an image for his work the interviewer asked what he envisioned for chainsaw man kensuke answered that chaos was the main factor behind the anime's theme stemming from denji's chainsaw man form he added that when creating the chainsaw sounds for denji's form he used ai tools for them and his answer stems from intriguing reasons that highlight how ai could be employed for art and music development but only under the right circumstances so we're going to stop right there for a second and i'm going to ask you guys is that a problem that he used ai for the the chainsaw man sounds in the film where chainsaws put out of work and out of commission for that you know i'm saying like again i know maybe i'm being a little bit what would be the word is it facetious i want to say facetious but that's probably not the word regardless of what again that's a perfectly reasonable thing and who's getting harmed by that like is are you worried about the the profits from chainsaws that were could have been bought to be utilized to make the sounds or the the sound effect guys that could have done chainsaws with their mouths like what would be the reason to get upset about utilizing it there Kensuke Ushio's reasoning for using AI to create the sounds for the chainsaw tool in the anime describing them as chaotic makes sense as it is complicated work If it is a tool that provides inspiration and helps bring the creator's vision to life, then there could be no better use.

for the major viewing audience in the world, rather than give it a nice fresh coat of paint when the Blu-rays inevitably come out.

But I am definitely excited to see how the rest of this goes, considering that I will admit, after Episode 5, Episode 6, 7, and 8 kind of didn't necessarily live up to any of the moments that happened after that, but I will admit that in the same vein that Shoko's frame of a silent voice being one of the most, like, soul-crushing, like, images that I've seen in anime, I will admit that Orihime's glare towards the end of that episode is probably going to live in my mind rent-free as easily one of the most memorable frames inside of this franchise or anime period so i will give myself the chance to go through because initially this episode was going to be on jumping into pro zd's original top 100 and then i ended up losing the list and then i was going to go through the final show of his that i hadn't necessarily had the chance to watch which in this case was Star Blazers, but then the more and more I looked into Star Blazers, the more and more I fell down the rabbit hole of not only its history, but the history of North American localized television, like dating all the way back to the 60s.

And so the more and more I ended up getting to think about it, it was like, okay, I'm going to have to go through and do more research on this if I'm going to be talking about it, and then kind of jump over later to give myself the chance to watch it.

But instead, I might as well go through and give myself a little bit of a chance to catch up on a lot of the things that I was able to go through and watch in theaters.

Because the only way that they were able to go through and get Cocoon into theaters is that they also added on...

I don't think it was an NHK documentary, but it was basically a documentary about...

Kensuke Ushio, who is the composer behind guys like Dawn to Dawn, like Chainsaw Man, like Devilman Crybaby, Colors Within, Liz and the Bluebird, Ping Pongs, A Silent Voice, like all of these guys, he is still arguably my favorite composer.

And I didn't realize that he was the one that was composing...

I think that one's a decent high school romance show.

just by the sound of this one, yeah, it's basically about a deaf girl and basically what her high school experience is like after having a terrible elementary school experience.
