A House of Dynamite

It starts very well.

House of Dynamite.

Yeah, and when sort of, you know, the Minister for Defence, you know, I'm just making up that title, when he walks off the roof.

The CI said, yeah, 50-50, good chance.

And he goes, we need to talk more about what a good chance is.

In that house of dynamite, the missiles coming in, so they launch their ground-based interceptor missiles, which miss it.

Um, and so one thing I was doing was suggesting, yes, they're the most egregious form of our assistance, um, to the Americans over nuclear weapons planning at Pine Gap is the so-called relay ground station, which is a ground station for early warning satellites with huge infrared telescopes on them, which firstly give the Americans early warning of, you know, the American president will now have 15 minutes to decide how many of us are going to Armageddon.

That's shown pretty clearly in the film A House of Dynamite, uh, for example.

Um, but secondly, what those satellites also do is say if you imagine there are 10, you know, 10 Chinese intercontinental ballistic missile silos in a given area, well, numbers one, two, three, four, five have fired their missiles, and so numbers six, seven, eight, nine, and 10 are our new targets.

In other words, Pine Gap facilitates nuclear second strike.

And then there's the organizational and decision-making fragility, which is, uh, how do you actually organize your national command authority? to make decisions about this.

And so I'm going to be a little bit controversial here, and I'll actually suggest in the case of the United States, you know, this was the scenario, if your listeners have seen House of Dynamite, that recent movie, you know, it kind of gets at a similar thing.

But there actually is no real pressure in a scenario like that for the United States to retaliate under time pressure.

And the reason for that I mean, there's multiple reasons for that.

It was a bad idea.
