Leonidas Goosby is crazy sounding.
T
42:38Tony BakerHOST
That's too much syllable But, uh, the stylization of 300, the way they made it was, like, I felt like, I don't wanna say revolutionary at the time, but it was a great change of pace.
Gene Wolfe’s Soldier of the Mist (ft. Marc Aramini)
M
21:33Marc AraminiGUEST
Yeah.
A
21:33Aaron IrberHOST
Well, I think, um, you know, when I was reading this the first time, you know, I, I watched the movie 300 when it came out, right?

Yes.
M

Mm-hmm.
A
22:02Aaron IrberHOST
Yeah.
A
22:02Aaron IrberHOST
So it's...
A
22:03Aaron IrberHOST
If you go into it and all you have for, like, your, your vision of Per- ancient Persia [laughs] and, like, the, you know, the, the Battle of Thermopylae is, um, is the movie 300, you're gonna be probably pretty confused.
A
22:15Aaron IrberHOST
Because, uh, the Persians [laughs] that's a pretty inaccurate portrayal of the Persians and, and the Spartans.

The Art of Soccer Chants: The Good, The Bad, and their History
A
8:27Andrew LonGUEST
Nearly always the kind of references to what we would maybe describe as chanting now are kind of military based.
A
8:36Andrew LonGUEST
So there's a really good example in the film about Sparta.
S
8:41speaker_8SOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
This is Sparta!
F
8:48Fernanda EchavarriHOST
And to be clear, we're talking about the film 300, which came out back in 2006, starring Gerard Butler.
A
8:53Andrew LonGUEST
two armies approach each other and the generals kind of face each other.
A
8:57Andrew LonGUEST
And one of the generals says to the general who has the smaller army, like, how can you possibly think you're going to win? You're massively outnumbered.
A
9:51Andrew LonGUEST
And the point the general is making is you are individuals.
A
9:55Andrew LonGUEST
We are one math.
#349: Pac-12 vs B1G - San Diego State vs UCLA Week-2 Preview
M
5:31Mateo San DiegoHOST
Can you give us a little bit from your mind on what you were thinking?
F
5:35FiendHOST
Well, I mean, the whole concept of it was centered around the movie The 300 and that they watched it as a team together, bonding experience.
F
5:47FiendHOST
And one of the things that stuck with Coach Lewis is when the Spartan was looking out at the massive Persian army and saying, is there anyone out there who can give me a worthy death? And so it's about two competitors going at each other, right? And it's about respect too, right? And I don't think that was really conveyed today with all the national media and everything.
F
6:13FiendHOST
If you back up in that press conference, Coach Lewis was very, very complimentary towards Coach Chesney.
M
6:36Mateo San DiegoHOST
Let's listen to what Lewis had to say and what you took from it.
S
6:40Sean LewisSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
This is what you want.
S
6:42Sean LewisSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
Like, let's step into an arena with one that's real, right? Like, I mean, it's kind of public knowledge that we watched 300 during camp, and there's an unbelievable scene.
S
6:48Sean LewisSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
It's one of my favorite movies, right? Like, they get to the hot gates, and it's the first time that the Spartan warriors see the Persian army, right? And the Spartan warrior starts laughing, and the, you know, mercenary that's with them that's helping fight is like, what are you laughing about? He's like, hopefully there's someone down there that can give me a worthy death.

Ancient versus modern depictions of 'The Odyssey' on Access Utah
J
36:21Jacob ButeraGUEST
So, of course, we watched Troy, the Brad Pitt version of Troy, and talked about the Trojan War.
J
36:26Jacob ButeraGUEST
We talked about 300, the Frank Miller adaptation and the Battle of Thermopylae.
J
36:32Jacob ButeraGUEST
We had to watch Spartacus.
J
36:33Jacob ButeraGUEST
We watched Monty Python's Life of Brian and talked about sort of early Christianity and what have the Romans done for us.
J
37:09Jacob ButeraGUEST
And most of what we talk about is, what is the modern adapter doing with it and why is the ancient material the choice to send that? So Spartacus is the most famous example of this because the writer had been blacklisted during the McCarthy era and it has this very us versus them, the poor and the masses against the elite and the power-happy people.
J
37:37Jacob ButeraGUEST
So there's a real... 50s political vibe to that.
J
37:42Jacob ButeraGUEST
And we watched the 300 Spartans from the 60s.
J
37:47Jacob ButeraGUEST
And you read that in the context of the Vietnam era and things along those lines.

Episode 93 - Cowboys & Aliens (2011)
R
27:04Reed SmithHOST
Well, what I just mean is, Michael, like, with whatever version we're seeing, whatever the motivation, it does just seem to make sense that when they do seem to have more powerful, I mean, I feel like there are times when, like, it's frustrating these aliens don't have vicious, scary-ness, so it's, like, weird that we don't just have kind of, like, them wanting to take over the world as kind of, like, all what they want to do in the way we see with kind of like the Stamp and Shannon and you're right there may be different nuances but usually it's just pretty clear with it then that they want to take over the world and we can look into the different nuances of those Michael if we do want to review anyway Man of Steel and Superman and the movies that Terrence Stamp Superman is
M
27:55Michael NorthHOST
in later but I think Zack Snyder is okay I actually enjoyed Man of Steel and I enjoyed Watchmen and 300's alright.
M
28:05Michael NorthHOST
I like the visual components of his movies, but I agree.
M
28:09Michael NorthHOST
There's not too much substance beyond that, beyond movies like MOS and Watchmen.

Disney+ is the perfect place to put this.
A
3:53AdamHOST
There's so many things Zack Snyder could be doing at Warner Brothers, but honestly, I didn't think a 300 prequel show was gonna be what was bringing him there.
A
4:04AdamHOST
And I don't really know.
A
4:06AdamHOST
I am in a small minority who doesn't really care for the film 300 much.
A
4:14AdamHOST
