This week on the podcast, as well as our run-through of the latest headline numbers, I'm going to be chatting with Louis and Sophie about Andy Burnham's big, bold conference speech and how that's likely to play with the public, what the opportunities are, what we think people will like, but also some of the risks as well.
Luke TrylHOST
0:42
I'll then be chatting to my colleague Andrew Fowler about the Green Party conference, which what's happened to the Green Party's polling in recent months and what Zach Polanski will be trying to do at that conference and how that links to that big by-election in Hoban and St Pancras next week.

Luke TrylHOST

Obviously, and we'll very definitely be talking about this on the podcast next week, because it will be election day in Hoban and St. Pancras.
Luke TrylHOST
50:17
How much in terms of, you know, maintaining momentum, continuing to look like a winner...
Luke TrylHOST
50:24
How much do you think Hoban and St Pancras matters in that regard? I mean, you know, on the one hand, putting yourself forward for it, you know, in a traditionally safe Labour seat is a brave and bold mood.
Luke TrylHOST
50:34
On the other hand, you know, it's a sort of seat that, you know, if the Greens are going to be a serious contender for a coalition, you'd expect them to be winning.
Russell WarfieldGUEST
39:46
So I'm sure most listeners will know that he used to be a Liberal Democrat.
Russell WarfieldGUEST
39:51
and in the 2015 election ended up debating the then Green Party leader Natalie Bennett in, funnily enough, the Hobart and St Pancras constituency, weirdly.
Russell WarfieldGUEST
40:04
And as a result of that he ended up, because he was really animated by proportional representation, and ended up sitting on loads of panels organised by the pressure group Make Votes Matter, which is basically a campaign for proportional representation, essentially became increasingly sort of persuaded and radicalised by sitting next to Natalie on these panels, which was part of his route into the Greens over the years.
Russell WarfieldGUEST
40:28
This is a preoccupation of Polanski as an individual, but also the party as well.

7 MINS LATER

Russell WarfieldGUEST
47:37
And yeah, I think that that's just welcomed by pretty much every wing of the party.
Russell WarfieldGUEST
47:41
So I think that the time of speaking is less than a week before we find out who's actually going forward.
Russell WarfieldGUEST
47:46
But the ground machine is certainly up and running in Hobart and St Pancras.
Russell WarfieldGUEST
47:51
There were literally hundreds of people out last weekend.
Connor TomlinsonHOST
0:00
Well, it happened again.
Connor TomlinsonHOST
0:01
Restore Britain tried to deliver their leaflets last weekend for the Holborn and St Pancras by-election.
Connor TomlinsonHOST
0:07
And just like the week before, the, as you can see, very well-adjusted people belonging to Stand Up to Racism and the Socialist Workers Party decided to mob them, harass them, attack them and assault them.
Connor TomlinsonHOST
0:19
But despite this being on camera, unlike the previous incident where one woman was arrested for an assault, the only person that got arrested this time is young Bob.

8 MINS LATER

Connor TomlinsonHOST
8:07
So the previous week saw stand-up to racism intercept Restore Britain's canvases and harass them to the point of where it wasn't safe to continue campaigning.
Connor TomlinsonHOST
8:17
However, this time around, the intrepid Lewis Holmes, who was the target of said mob previously, decided to take it upon himself to lead them on a wild goose chase.
Connor TomlinsonHOST
8:29
So Rupert points out that despite the Holborn and St Pancras campaigning team hiring private security, moving locations, etc, they did anticipate that Stand Up to Racism would somehow find out their location and go after them.
Connor TomlinsonHOST
8:43
So the plan was that Lewis, who knew he would be targeted, volunteered to leave the main group and take the protesters along with him.
Ian CollinsHOST
32:08
They were talking about Palestine action.
Ian CollinsHOST
32:10
I was really intrigued by what was happening in Holborn and St Pancras, where Keir Starmer's old seat, where some Restore Britain campaigners went out.
Ian CollinsHOST
32:18
This isn't democracy to legitimately give out leaflets and talk about their political party and getting people interested in what they stand for.
Ian CollinsHOST
32:27
They were met with a tirade of anger.

6:22
So
Shanice McBeanHOST
6:22
Zach Polanski is obviously running in Holborn and St. Pancras by election, which the polling will begin for that on the 8th of October.
Shanice McBeanHOST
6:31
And I guess the timing of this conference represented a bit of a logistical and political issue for the Green Party, because the conference is taking place from the 2nd to the 4th of October.
Shanice McBeanHOST
6:42
So obviously that's quite inconvenient because there are a lot of resources tied up in running a big conference.
Shanice McBeanHOST
8:01
That vote was lost.
Shanice McBeanHOST
8:03
I think it's a good thing that that vote was lost.
Shanice McBeanHOST
8:06
You know, there would have been a lot of created for individual members had the conference been postponed, a lot of wasted resources, no guarantee that it would have actually converted to a political win in Hoban and St. Pancras.
Shanice McBeanHOST
8:20
And actually the political fallout of that for Zach Polanski could have been potentially massive.
Basil ValentineCORRESPONDENT
16:47
Well, apart from the fact the clue is in the name, this latest ban on Arab parties in the elections is the clearest indication that Israel is not only racist, but also that often trotted out claim that it's the only democracy in the middle east i saw julia hartley brewer repeating that just 24 hours before this announcement well that's got to go in the dustbin now because obviously if you're banning political parties that represent a sizable chunk of your population then you're not a democracy simple as that even within the borders of 1946 israel Of course, the Green Party is now a significant electoral force in Britain, particularly since Zach Polanski, who, of course, as many viewers will know, is himself Jewish, since Zach was elected leader.
Basil ValentineCORRESPONDENT
17:45
Now, Zach is also standing in the Hoban and St Pancras by-election, the seat that was vacated by Keir Starmer.
Basil ValentineCORRESPONDENT
17:54
And that's caused lots of shenanigans.
Basil ValentineCORRESPONDENT
17:58
Zak wanted the conference itself to be postponed so that activists could devote all their energies to helping him win a notable victory and get into the House of Commons.
HarryHOST
29:17
There's plenty more to go on top.
HarryHOST
29:19
But, Callum, tell us about what's going on in St Pancras.
Callum BarkerGUEST
29:25
Holborn and St Pancras, the by-elections.
Callum BarkerGUEST
29:28
Oh, wait, actually, should we get the segment up, please, Samson? I'm not sure, do I need that gadget? There we go.
Callum BarkerGUEST
29:34
You can use the mouse.
HarryHOST
29:39
Is that me controlling
Callum BarkerGUEST
29:40
it? Yes, you're controlling it.
Callum BarkerGUEST
29:41
The first segment I put together, sorry if it's a tad shabby, but we're just going to give a, I want to have a bit of a discussion and an overview about Holborn and St Pancras by-election.
Sienna RodgersGUEST
12:58
So it's all going a bit wrong.
Sienna RodgersGUEST
13:01
And for the Labour Party, we will see what happens in the Hobart and St Pancras by-election, right? That's a real, like, important proof point.
Sienna RodgersGUEST
13:09
But the whole point of Burnham, the whole idea is, as I said, to unite the left.
Sienna RodgersGUEST
13:14
The fact that he can bring back those Green voters who were so disgusted by Keir Starmer's comments on Gaza and LBC in that infamous interview.
Michael WalkerHOST
13:01
Reform's shift to the extreme right has been driven by competition from the even more racist Restore Britain Party.
Michael WalkerHOST
13:09
Their candidate in the upcoming Hoban and St Pancras by-election has apparently taken to following women with headscarves around the constituency.
Tyler JohnsonSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
13:16
Hello, my name is Tyler Johnson and I am the Restore Britain by-election candidate for Hoban and St Pancras constituency.
Tyler JohnsonSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
13:23
If you're a woman in this area, you do not feel safe.
Tyler JohnsonSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
13:25
There is no way you can go out, go to a pub, go to a bar and walk down the street at night and feel like you're safe.
Luke TrylHOST
7:40
So Green defectors have been won back.
Luke TrylHOST
7:43
May bode well for Labour in the upcoming Hoban and St Pancras by-election, where obviously Green leader Zach Polanski is vying to win.
Luke TrylHOST
7:58
the seat and regain some of their momentum.
Luke TrylHOST
8:01
But what's interesting is that Labour have made rather less progress on their right flank.
