2006 Cannes Film Festival

Twenty years ago, Sofia Coppola released her third film, Marie Antoinette.

Arriving off the back of her Oscar win for Lost in Translation, the film, starring Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman, was highly anticipated when it premiered at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival.

Its initial reception was famously divisive.

Much of the friction seemed to trace back to the film's take on a defining chapter of French history, and French critics, protective of their past, weren't sure what to make of Coppola's take on their last queen.
