Patrick MadridHOST

But, I mean, I think there is a useful connection there.
Patrick MadridHOST
29:34
I don't know, though, that I would use this, at least not, I wouldn't put a lot of weight on it, as a way to demonstrate the inspiration and the fact that 1 and 2 Maccabees belong in the canon of Scripture.
Patrick MadridHOST
29:48
I mean, that's settled already.
Patrick MadridHOST
29:49
The Church has said for quite a long time that those books belong in the canon.
Patrick MadridHOST
29:57
So it is interesting to note that, but I wouldn't use it personally as an argument to say, therefore, because we see in 1 and 2 Maccabees the Feast of Hanukkah, which is not mentioned by that name in the New Testament, we can therefore assert that those books belong in the canon.
Patrick MadridHOST
30:16
I think that's a bridge too far to make that argument.
Patrick MadridHOST
30:19
They do belong in the canon, and there are other reasons to say so.
Marcus PeterHOST

We'll get into more of this and how all of this came to be, but in the Catholic Bible, there's a book called 2 Maccabees.
Mark GagnonHOST
10:07
And in it is a really important story from Jewish history about a battlefield, and this is sort of how it goes.
Mark GagnonHOST
10:12
There's a Jewish army led by a commander named Judas Maccabeus, and he had just won a pretty brutal fight.

Mark GagnonHOST
33:45
But regardless, there's a second problem here, and this is a scriptural one.
Mark GagnonHOST
33:49
Remember how we talked like, "Hey, praying for the dead and, you know, offering things for the dead is biblical.
Mark GagnonHOST
33:54
It's in 2 Maccabees"? The story where the guy like offers up the prayers and the payments for the dead soldiers that have like the pagan sort of, uh, you know, like, like, uh, idols on them, well, that book isn't in every Christian Bible.
Mark GagnonHOST
34:07

The longer part of Esther, the book of Judith and Baruch and Tobit and 1 and 2 Maccabees, etc., That was part of all that.
Patrick MadridHOST
9:45
And one thing to remember, too, is that the authority to make determinations had passed out of the hands of the rabbis and now was in the hands of the apostles.
Patrick MadridHOST
9:55
The church now has the authority to make those decisions ultimately, which it did.
William AlbrechtHOST

You're cooked." Temporal earthly punishment doesn't apply to the afterlife.
William AlbrechtHOST
27:33
Well, you, you, you would most definitely have a, a hard time, uh, explaining that with those Second Maccabees, [laughs] you know? You would, would definitely have a tough time, and let me show you the example.
William AlbrechtHOST
27:45
Let's open up, uh, let's open up our Bible.
William AlbrechtHOST

Roger FergusonHOST

People refuse to surrender worship and covenant identity to a king's decree.
Roger FergusonHOST
8:03
2 Maccabees also preserves the conviction that obedience and resurrection, hope, matter more than an oppressor's threats.
Roger FergusonHOST
8:11
But to read the history faithfully, we also have to keep going.
Alex McFarlandHOST
35:48
Well, so this relates in a way to what we're talking about, like the Book of Enoch.
Alex McFarlandHOST
35:55
There have been several amounts of books that are sometimes called the apocryphal books or deuterocanonical books, like D-E-U-T-E-R, deuterocanonical, which means second canon, and And some of these that go way back to Old Testament times would be like Judith, the Wisdom of Solomon, Baruch, 1 and 2 Maccabees, that were not ever really recognized as part of the Old Testament canon.
Alex McFarlandHOST
36:28
And some Bibles have these Old Testament apocryphal books, and some do not.
Alex McFarlandHOST
36:35
But during the time of the Reformation, okay, during the 1500s, to really, I'm just going to say it, you know, try to stand against Luther and and the Reformers, and there were some cardinals, like there was a man named Cardinal Carafa, C-A-R-A-F-F-A, and there were several others.
JoshuaAUDIENCE
39:33
But I was thinking there's a lot of beliefs here.
JoshuaAUDIENCE
39:37
that Catholics hold, and I was recently confirmed back in Pentecost, so I'm kind of exploring a ton out here, and there's a lot of stuff that we could point to back in the Old Testament, and I was wondering what in the Old Testament, besides 2 Maccabees, because that's the place where we see, hey, there's prayers for the dead.
JoshuaAUDIENCE
39:57
That would point to kind of like a post-mortem state where prayers are useful, right, in something like purgatory.
JoshuaAUDIENCE
40:04
So I'm wondering, are there any other contemporaneous sources in the Old Testament, in any of those time periods in the Old Testament, whole era, where we see in the Jewish belief, and even some of their own sources, non-Biblical sources, Yeah, they believe in some sort of post-mortem cleansing that could either be purgatory itself or something that is pointing to the deeper reality of, I don't know.
JoshuaAUDIENCE
40:33
Do you hear what I'm trying to ask?
Karlo BroussardGUEST
40:36
Yeah, yeah.
Karlo BroussardGUEST
40:37
So with regard to other Jewish sources, Jewish sources outside of the Old Testament, do they attest to any sort of relationship between those who have gone before us and us here on earth? And if that's what you're asking for, as I hear you asking, then the answer is yes, something besides 2 Maccabees, right? And I do point this out in my book, in my section where I talk about how at least some understanding of purgatory is part and parcel of the Jewish theological milieu, as attested to in 2 Maccabees 12, but also in the Tosefta, a compilation of Jewish oral law from the late 2nd century, the period of the Mishnah.
Karlo BroussardGUEST
41:21
there's a passage in there where it talks about three classes of souls, one of which would be the wicked, like for Gehenna.
