... seeing your little girl get older is, is probably hard.

I, I would imagine with a boy, not that, you know, you're kinda like setting them up and you're setting your boy to become older in a way.

But it's, it's, you know, I think that will be the hardest part.

I mean, 'cause they, uh, uh, uh, you know, as you know, the girls just know, they know how to work their dads and-

Yeah, Burr was, Burr was a big one, 'cause Burr, I remember Burr, uh, he told me, uh, again, it was at Caroline's.

And, uh, 'cause we'd go watch Burr, like, before he blew up, and it'd be like you could go sit in the back of the room and watch 'cause it wasn't sold out.

And then I remember the next yearIt was, uh, it was like they wouldn't even let us come in the room 'cause it was too sold out.

Mm-hmm.

And like so...

But Burr, like when he, just when he knew your name, when he f- like he knew he knew you, and, uh, it was a, it was a really big deal.

Uh, you can't...

It's, the, it, the hard part is it leaves your mind.

You know, do you, you, you've probably had this with, like, sport.

Do you have, like, any, like, so many sports where everybody's like, "Did you enjoy that, like, finals or whatever that you were able to go to?" And you're like, "I don't remember going." 'Cause you, you kinda just have to keep mo- You're doing so much stuff that's, like, kind of crazy, so you kinda gotta keep moving.

And it, it's like that with stand-up.

Like, once, once I get done taping a special, which Fort Worth next week I'm taping my special, and so once I get done taping it, it's like my brain is on, like, panic mode to find a new, to build a new hour.

Mm-hmm.

Oh, okay.

That's what stuck out for me.

So I, I very much enjoyed making people laugh.

And when I would do shows with him, like, you know, not that I...

We, he, he would have me come out some and help and he would try to be funny, and we would do stuff at, uh, church and all this.

And so, uh, that was the biggest impact was I think making people laugh.

I, I, I, I definitely loved that and carried on with that of just always trying to, yeah, make people laugh.

Like, I, I'd come in and take your job back if I was him." I wanna know a little bit about, I wanna know a little bit about The Breadwinner, uh, Nate, and why this is so different, because I, I hear it's a different kind of movie, maybe a movie that people aren't used to seeing these days.

Uh, you can't...

It's, they, it's, the hard part is it leaves your mind.

You ever see that movie?

Yes, very much.

And like, so it was, you know, definitely, uh...

When I first came up with it, I was, uh, naive enough to, I was like, we were saying it, and then I was like, "Oh, yeah." And then it was like, uh, it reminded of Mr.

Mom.

You're like, "Oh, yeah, that's why it's a great idea." And so it's, yeah, very much influenced by John Hughes, who made a lot of those movies.

And, you know, this fits very much in our personality.

What do you think?

We have one daughter, so it's like, but I mean, even with our daughter, like, my wife has to, the, like, kids get, she's 13.

Like, they get so busy.

There, you know, there's just so much going on, and if your kid's in sports too, it's, it's nonstop.

And, uh, the balance of, like, you gotta pick everybody up.

You only have so many times, you know, it's like, all right, I gotta get them there and them there, and whatever.

And so kids are, I think, much busier than we were growing, or I was growing up.

Even though you were doing it all fake and doing it for the movie, it's still pretty freaky when you're in that room and they're all judging you, right?

Oh, yeah.

And I mean, Mandy went down and so they were filming all day, which you've been there.

And then so we just kind of tagged in at the end.

So, I mean, they're very much in the in the mood of this and they've just done a bunch of stuff.

pitches and so mandy got told uh you know everything that you got told right before he went down like he was like yeah just give me the big steal and walking down that uh tunnel and you know seeing it so much on tv and then they they were just so great even though we had lines it's like they would do the lines and then they would like kind of like uh they would get going and they would start adding their own stuff.

And, you know, you felt like you were being rushed, which is funny because you're like, we wrote the movie, you know, but they still, you still would feel that way.

If you had each one to do again, would you rather make another movie or host another Emmys? Since you did both of them first pretty recently.

did you have to run um mandy moore who plays your wife in the film through like your current wife because i feel like at some point your wife's gonna have feelings about your on-screen wife and did she have any actual input or say like you can't have anyone who's too good looking but also i need to be someone i respect that you have any input on this

Uh, yeah, it's, she is, she's a big Mandy Moore fan.

Mandy was like the perfect, I mean, my wife knew, like we were not, you know, there's not like a makeout scene in this movie.

So there, it was all going to be very in good taste.

But, uh, yeah, I mean, it's, I remember that I like, you know, we had like a husband and wife kiss.

Just a normal husband-wife kiss.

That was like the first, when we did it, my wife came to that.

I mean, you know, it's like I understand the idea of, like, no one wants change and no, like, all this kind of stuff.

But I, I think it's an exciting change, and I think as a city, as long as you don't lose your identity, then it's a great thing.

And so if you, I think Tennessee does great with that, Nashville does great with that.

As long as we kinda keep who we are and, you know, it really feels like you're coming, you're, you're coming here, and we're able to be hospitable to whoever comes here and show them, uh, a great time.

And I think it's a, yeah, I think it's a good thing that they're, that it's moving forward.

It's interesting with movies, man.

You start looking at, like, theaters, like, you know, you guys making, in distribution, all this.

Like, you know, think about touring.

Like, there's, it's hard not to think about movies and touring as kinda like the same kinda thing.

You know, you get a promoter, you get this, you go to every town.

Sorry.

I, every idea I have, I, I want someone to say, "No, you can't do that." Now we have a lot of people that are qualified and know what they're doing, and so you see that they need, uh, the...

You know, you gotta like, y- they need the vision.

They need the, the, again, you go back to the creator, like, uh, you have to be that aspect.

You know, Walt Disney was a creator, and it's...

I always think of it like Walt Disney could walk into any room and put on a, some type of show.

Even though he wasn't a comedian, he wasn't anything, but I get he could tell stories or he could do something.

Uh, and our show's editor, Henry, actually w- had a question for you, which was that doing the second SNL, uh, w- following that up, does that put more pressure on you? Or is it like, you know, a w- a comfortable jacket, like I know this one works? Like, h- how did that all go?

Are you a Titans fan, or?

I'm a Titans guy, a Vanderbilt guy, and, uh, I just love sports in general.

Great with basketball, it's like I, I just kind of root for great games.

I love, uh, I love the small market.

Like, you know, last year, the Indiana and, uh, OKC game was unbelievable.

Tyler, you know, Haliburton, what he was doing is insane.

Uh, I love just where the NBA is.

Congratulations.

But what, what does that do for y- what does that do for your, like, rhythm-wise, et cetera, when you're just doing six people? Like, uh-

Well, I had to learn to get people into my rhythm very quickly.

So since I'm, talk slower, and I was from the South and all this, I had to figure out, 'cause I would follow, like, high-energy acts, and then I'd come up, and I'm like, "Well, I gotta come up with a joke," or, "I gotta say something.

I just need you to hear my voice for a second so you can go like, 'All right,' readjust, and be like, 'Now we're in this rhythm.'" And then get into the first kinda-

Nate, before I let you go, how do you know Greg Garcia? How did that happen, this son of a gun, speaking of son of a guns?

Uh, so I, uh, we...

I've, I've tried to make a bunch of shows that have never gone.

We've had one show that we shot a pilot, and, uh, and so Greg came in.

I went to Career Day for my daughter's school, and I, like, I get what I do is very fun, but I was nervous 'cause I'm there with real people, and they're smart.

And so I was hoping to sit at a table alone.

They put me at a table with a surgeon.

[audience laughing] Almost to show the kids, "Here's the difference between reading." [audience laughing]

How do we set up w- uh, the, the premise of the, of the, uh, film?

Uh, it's, uh, The Breadwinner.

So it's, I, uh, I work.

I'm a car dealer.

Uh, and my wife is a stay-at-home mom, and she invents something and goes on Shark Tank.

And so then that kinda takes off, and then I have to stay with the kids.

And it's, you know, it's a movie that's just, like, it's...

the people at home what this is?

Ian Rapoport has it, had it first.

Ian Rapoport did, yeah.

Uh, so it was...

But, like, being back there and seeing it, so everybody gets done, and then at the end of it, he goes, "Whoa, whoa, whoa," and he stops and he says, and he gives it up to Candace Lee for, like, what she has done for this program.

So there's stuff that I, you do see, where you're like this guy does think, uh, not just about himself, but even, like, her, who would, you know, I don't know, it's no one else was...

I mean, everybody knows that she does great, but no o- we were gonna just walk out of the room.

... stressful for you?

No, no, it was, I think the, I've done it twice.

... that's pretty impressive.

It's, it's, it's very impressive.

We, you know, I mean, I was in Syracuse last night, and so it was, uh, the shows have been unbelievable.

The tours have been great.

This has been just such a big tour.

I was touring when we were doing this movie, and it was-

Well, what's it called?

It's, it's called Nateland, and it's just, uh, it won't be all about me.

As Nate Bargetzi sees it, the reflection helped shape America.

In a country like ours that is the most big, it's comedy that brings us together through jokes about the experiences we all share.

There is almost nothing that The Andy Griffith Show, The Jefferson, Saturday Night Live, or Seinfeld have in common, other than the premise that a laugh can be found almost anywhere in this country on nearly any topic.

When done right, American comedy shines light into dark places in a digestible way.

For example, Blazing Saddles and All in the Family confronted bigotry by ridiculing prejudice.

Walls were broken down in the process.

Few things have that kind of power in America.

How old were you when this happened?

It was at Just for Laughs.

Soder was in the van.

Uh, s- we were at Just for Laughs.

The pr- like, the guy that ran Just for Laughs at the time was in the van.

He was in the sh- he was up front.

This is, like, before I realized I had claustropho- but it was like st- you know, I was confused by it.
