1993 Storm of the Century

The Children's Blizzard, as it was also known, led to improvements in weather forecasting and the telegraph warning system in the United States.

The Storm of the Century in March 1993 affected the entire eastern United States, producing snow from Alabama to Maine and spawning tornadoes in Florida.

That storm dropped snow as far south as the Florida Panhandle and produced record low barometric pressures, with a footprint so large that it closed every major airport on the East Coast at the same time.

In 1952, an avalanche of wet snow in the village of Airolo, Switzerland, destroyed several buildings and killed ten people, leading to major investments in avalanche defense infrastructure.
