1976 Winter Olympics

Well, as we mentioned earlier, the 1976 Winter Olympics might be in a little bit of trouble.

A special meeting called in Innsbruck, Austria coincides with this weekend's cancellation, uh, women's and men's World Cup ski races in West Germany because of an almost complete lack of snow.

A similar snow shortage is endangering the women's and men's giant slalom and slalom track west of Innsbruck.

Innsbruck suffered from a similiar, uh, similar shortage of snow when it staged the 1964 Olympics on the same track.

The shortage was then overcome with the help of Army soldiers and volunteers shoveling snow onto the tracks brought in on trucks from the surrounding mountains.

So perhaps a problem there for the 1976 Winter Olympics.

Um, in 1970, the International Olympic Committee awarded the 1976 Winter Olympics to a US state.

However, fearing the expense, legislators from that state put forward a 1972 referendum in which 59% [laughs] of the voters rejected hosting the Olympics.

This then caused the Olympic Committee to re-award the 1976 Winter Olympics to Innsbruck, Austria, which was able to reuse many of the same sports venues when it held the games in 1964.

Which state is the only chosen venue to turn down hosting the Olympic Games?
