1928 Okeechobee hurricane

Here they are today in weather history.

September the 16th, 1928 after ravaging Puerto Rico, the San Felipe hurricane made landfall on Florida's east coast as a category four Lake Okeechobee overflowed flooding surrounding communities with surge as high as 20 feet.

At least 2,500 people were killed in the United States.

And today's Daily Weather History segment comes to us courtesy of the Southeast Regional Climate Center and the images you see there.

You can kind of read the caption, uh, trucks carrying coffins to the Everglades and then Everglades in the vicinity of Belle Glade underwater.

And then, uh, It just says place in Belle Glade where a large number of bodies were found.

Again, on this day, September the 16th, 1928, the San Felipe hurricane making landfall on Florida's east coast as a Category 4.

This was the year of one of the deadliest hurricanes in United States history.

The Okeechobee Hurricane, known more commonly as the San Felipe II Hurricane, killed more than 2,500 people in the United States.

In Puerto Rico in particular, San Felipe II was the worst hurricane the island had ever experienced.

That was until Hurricane Maria in 2017.
