We're having our annual meeting this year in Swannanoa at Warren Wilson College, so an absolutely beautiful, just beautiful place to be.

And, you know, Swannanoa got hit so hard by Helene.

It did.

We only have four people in this state with the Plant Conservation Program to manage 37 preserves across North Carolina.

It's a labor of love.

Yeah, that didn't happen there at all

because I didn't have any way to do that.

In the 90s, I fully only had so much bandwidth, probably because of ADHD and all that.

I only had so much bandwidth for researching other people and what they'd done because there was only so much information you could get.

Yeah, especially if you're at Warren Wilson and in the mountains.

I just really enjoyed the furthest ends of the bizarre spectrum of human expression.

Boyce grew up in the Connecticut suburbs and holds a bachelor's degree from Haverford College, which has been in the news lately, and an MFA from the program for writers at Warren Wilson College.

Now, where is Warren Wilson College?

It is in Swannanoa, North Carolina.

So right outside of Asheville.

I remember when I graduated high school in 1983, and a lot of kids I know did it.

They would go to either Berea, Kentucky, to Berea University, or Warren Wilson College outside of Asheville over here.

And you could work your way through college by working in the fields, et cetera.

My daughter used to work at Warren Wilson College.

You got known at least locally first through the Barrelhouse Mamas, right? Talk about that group and how that imprinted on you where you wanted to go with your music, both what you were able to do within the group and what you weren't able to do within the group.

Yeah, so that group formed with two friends, and then we added a third member later on at Warren Wilson College.

Did all of you go to Warren Wilson?

We did, yes, and that's where we met.

And so it was Molly Reed, Eleanor Underhill, myself, and then later on we added Anna Bauman Smith into the group.
