Not quite this year.

It comes out on 14th of January from Viking, which is an imprint of Penguin.

And it has a football theme, but if...

There are some of you, I'm told, don't like football and don't switch off.

Uh, he hosts that show on sports net along with Nick Kiprios.

And, uh, yeah, it was, uh, published Viking press, 2023.

Uh, part of the jacket description here is down and back as a Frank and unflinching appraisal of the game and born's relationship with it, the violence and the danger, the booze and the drugs, the consequences of fame, uh, but it is also an honest look at what is redeeming about the sport through the eyes of someone who grew up in NHL dressing rooms, who has skated on NHL ice as both a player and a coach, and who inherited the game from a man he's grown to better understand by looking more closely at himself.

Yeah, so the insight for me was this is Bob Bourne's son, Bob Bourne being a key part of the New York Islanders, four Stanley Cups in a row.

And she was a formidable woman and a brilliant paperback publisher.

And then after that, I went to work for Penguin as an editorial assistant at Viking and then slowly got promoted there.

Yeah.

So I was at Penguin for about a decade.

So she writes Psychological Suspense.

I don't have any literary fiction coming and I'm, you know, I'd love to find some...

Well, I'm never very literary, but I'd love to find some... accessible literary fiction because, you know, That's sort of where my editorial heartland was of Viking.

But it's hard to find.

So surprisingly, after he submitted it to publishers, it wasn't originally embraced, even though, right, he was already an accomplished children's author.

So ultimately, Viking Press decided to publish it.

It went through a lot of editing, a lot of revisions.

The editor at Viking was Annis Duff, and there's no reliable evidence that Freeman intended the department store to be Macy's, Bloomingdale's, or any other particular store.

I send her the rest of the book, and I don't know, maybe three, four months later, she took me on and sold it to Viking Penguin.

Um, I, I was, I was happy to self-publish it.

So I never knew that it was gonna be a bestseller.

And it's a thriller.

Today's guest is a longtime writer and editor, but a first time novelist.

His book, Near Shore, is available today, August 18th, through Viking Press.

It is a quick-paced thriller that follows a surfer lifeguard as he cracks a code, but must convince investigators that the makers of recently detonated bombs are not only homegrown locals, but they're also hiding in plain sight.

It poses scarily plausible real-world scenarios that illustrate just how so much of this life of convenience that we all live nowadays also leaves us incredibly vulnerable.
