And Bates could have taken that and carried on.

But the offer from Abramovich was too good to turn down.

Having lived through, as some of us did, the last attack on hunting, that was... fundamental to the parliamentary Labour Party.

There were two MPs in particular, some will remember, Gerald Kaufman and Tony Banks, who relentlessly badgered the government and led the charge.

I remember Gerald Kaufman, who was a very well-respected center ground MP, writing a piece in the Times saying that he'd never voted against the government in his entire career, but he'd vote against foundation hospitals unless Tony Blair brought back the hunting bill.

Yeah, that was the level of commitment.
