Something Weird Video

Dying before you, not as a warning, but as an ecstatic sacrifice on the altar of entertainment.

We continue our discussion on Something Weird Video...

I've drafted a list of 69 films that might begin to illustrate their aesthetics and refined taste, and the movie being discussed today, The God Monster of Indian Flats, from director Frederick Hobbs, is number 64 on the list.

Released briefly in 1973, Something Weird found themselves in possession of a 35mm print, initially dropping it on VHS in 1996 as part of the Frank Henenlotter's Sexy Shocker series.

He would produce Louis Teague's Alligator a few years later.

But this would be the final feature film for Frederick Hobbes, who would continue his path as a visual artist until his death in 2018.

God Monster screened only a few times before being stuck back on the shelf, waiting to be rediscovered by Something Weird Video.

Perhaps if he'd only made his first three films and stayed away from the creature feature genre, his legacy as a filmmaker would be seen more like Bill Gunn's brief career, or something along the lines of a missing Robert Downey Sr. We'd wonder what paths he would have taken.

It covers a wide range of information to the point of the documentary feeling a bit clumsy, but it's still a really thought-provoking film, and I would love to hear you guys explore this salacious room in the mansion of cinema.

Some of the clips they show reminded me of if footmen tire, what will horses do? And they illustrate a direct through line from these educational scare films to a local gay community being oppressed, and they get Mike Varney of Something Weird video to weigh in." So it was an old documentary then.

Well, no, here's the thing.

This Hell's Highway movie, it's from like 2002.

Okay.
