Savannah College of Art and Design

So this was, you know, 20 years ago now, and, uh, that, that's me, improv theater, jazz ensemble, improvisation, but nothing about visual arts.

And almost accidentally had an opportunity to go on a sabbatical leave at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia.

I jumped at that opportunity because partly it's just a beautiful city to be in.

Uh, Savannah, Georgia, if, uh, you know, if you haven't been there, anyone listening, uh, please, if you get the opportunity, go there because [laughs] it's beautiful.

You know, is there anything that you saw in the schools that you think is lacking in industry?

Well, let me say why I called it learning to see, and maybe we'll get back into that.

Uh, so in 2010 when I first went into this, uh, Savannah College of Art and Design, I'm, remem- remember that I'm a creativity researcher, and at that point I was in a school of education, so I'm also a learning scientist and I'm identifying myself as someone who studies how people learn to be creative.

So I was calling my project Learning How to Create, and I would introduce myself to one of these, uh, professors who teaches art or design.

[laughs] So that's Hannah, that, our daughter, Hannah.

She, she lived in Apartment 2B in Savannah when she went to SCAD-

Oh, yeah

All on a call together.

And you were like, guys, my boss at SCAD.

DW.

I was trying to create.

But if I wanted to do like a feature in Savannah,

what would that look

like? And he just goes, and DW Moffitt, who is an incredible human being who Haley has met and my wonderful boss at SCAD.

He is the chair of film and television at SCAD.

So I started off really wanting to be a metalsmith, which is kind of a different tact.

I went to Savannah College of Art and Design and graduated in 2006. with a degree in metals and jewelry and a minor in costume design.

And I started my own business doing mostly clothing with a little bit of jewelry as well, because I had a better setup for clothing than I did a metal shop, which I had some, but not the extent that I needed to really pursue it in a professional manner.

And started my own business with self-employed for a good 10 or 15 years before I was like, you know, I'm not doing everything I want to be doing.

You know, where did, where did your career kinda go from there? What was your first gig? How did you end up kinda navigating to some of these bigger projects?

So when I graduated from SCAD, um, the...

You had, I can't remember, I think it's an F-1 visa.

I can't remember if that's what it's called.

I'm very excited to tell you about the story of Shiprocked, a special documentary film currently in production about the cruise.
