The San Francisco Opera and its orchestra have tentatively agreed on a new contract.

As NPR's Chloe Veltman reports, it comes after musicians called a strike last week that canceled performances.

The opera orchestra members have agreed to return to the pit after fraught days of negotiations with the company's management.

Management said the proposed pay levels reflected long-term economic realities, given the opera's fifteen million dollar annual deficit.

The details of the new contract are not being made public and must still be ratified.

In a joint statement, San Francisco Opera General Director Matthew Shilvock and the musician leading the negotiations, oboist Gabe Young, characterized the deal as being fair for both sides.

The season is now scheduled to open next Tuesday with Giuseppe Verdi's Simone Boccanegra.

I'm not going to comment too much on it.

This was the first strike in the opera's history and was centered on wages.

No details of the terms of the settlement or when performances will resume have been announced yet.

The strike started last Saturday on what would have been the company's opening night for the season.

This is a very recent opera that deals with a real historical figure, his capture in West Africa, traveling across the Atlantic, and life in slavery in South Carolina.

Omar premiered in Spoleto in 2022 and has since been performed at major companies, LA Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, and San Francisco Opera.

And the reviews have been pretty ecstatic.

So I, for one, am excited to check it out in person.
