Episode 451: Vinay Seth Mohta - CEO & Co-Founder, Manifold
V
16:15Vinay Seth MohtaGUEST
One of the people I met was Paul English at the time.
V
16:18Vinay Seth MohtaGUEST
And he said, hey, there's this group associated with the Brigham and with Partners in Health, Paul Farmer, Jim Kim, And they're trying to bring a bunch of folks together from the startup community to help global health.
V
16:34Vinay Seth MohtaGUEST
And so I thought, okay, this is super interesting.
V
16:38Vinay Seth MohtaGUEST
And so that's how I got introduced to the global health delivery team.
Sierra Bainbridge on Seeking Abundance
S
18:35Sierra BainbridgeGUEST
To think of these things holistically is how we can kind of minimize these jumps of disease.
S
18:41Sierra BainbridgeGUEST
And this school in particular was, it's Harvard School of Public Health and Partners in Health and really trying to think about how you deliver healthcare to Sub-Saharan Africa.
S
18:50Sierra BainbridgeGUEST
And it was actually the donor that said, we want this to be a One Health institution.
S
18:54Sierra BainbridgeGUEST
And so that forced us as the designers to dig in deep and really learn about this approach.
7 MINS LATER
S
25:58Sierra BainbridgeGUEST
I just wanted to comment on that one thing because I do think that the notion of systems change and that being part of our goal as an organization has been there from the very beginning.
S
26:13Sierra BainbridgeGUEST
And part of it is learning, kind of understanding that that's how we wanted to engage in kind of needs globally that architecture could help solve for.
S
26:25Sierra BainbridgeGUEST
But I think part of it is working with initially with nonprofits who also think that way, right? Like Partners in Health is thinking about how do we interrupt these systems of structural violence? How do we change health care systems across a nation to uplift all people? So they're thinking about it in that way.
S
26:42Sierra BainbridgeGUEST
And so I think for us, we just kind of ride the coattails.
Sierra Bainbridge on abundant futures
S
10:30Sierra BainbridgeGUEST
Yeah, sure.
S
10:30Sierra BainbridgeGUEST
So It was a group that was started out of a group of students who met Paul Farmer, who was the head and kind of founder of Partners in Health, which is an amazing nonprofit healthcare delivery organization that really is not like Doctors Without Borders, who serve a very important need in post-conflict situations.
S
10:56Sierra BainbridgeGUEST
Paul Farmer's thought about this is that in order to have lasting change and systemic impact over time, you have to embed in community and build those systems from the bottom up alongside those places.
S
11:07Sierra BainbridgeGUEST
And so when Partners in Health goes into a place, they stay forever.
S
11:11Sierra BainbridgeGUEST
And eventually that organization becomes a local organization.
S
11:14Sierra BainbridgeGUEST
But they're always working within the Ministry of Health.
K

It is a nonprofit firm.
K

Can you just talk a little bit about the why of that and then how that works? Why is that different?

I think what makes his career especially interesting, and by the way, what I've just described is really interesting, but what to me is so interesting is the way that he's been able to work across clinical medicine, global health, community organizations, government, and all of it's focused on how we translate what we know into better health.

It's completely unacceptable to live in a world where, depending on where you're born, you either have a 6% chance of dying in pregnancy or essentially a 0.01% chance.
J

As for why Sierra Leone, it was mostly because people we spoke to said that, especially at Partners in Health, the organization we work with, that Sierra Leone was a place where we could bend the arc, where the government was investing in maternal and child health, and where they didn't have nearly enough resources to really do what they needed to do.

Partners in Health is based out of Boston and they work with the people who other people have forgotten, right? So we're talking about people with multiple drug resistant tuberculosis, HIV, and in countries that no one may ever have heard of.
S

And so, you know, they've dedicated their lives to helping bring voice to populations that otherwise wouldn't have a voice.
S
7:37Shunling TsangGUEST
And I thought, wow, it's so inspiring to see these people do the work they do.
