Karl's a medical doctor and he's an MP in the South African Parliament where he's Deputy Spokesperson on Health for the Democratic Alliance, which is the main opposition party.

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference is the flagship annual conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, where speakers, presiding officers, MPs and governance experts from the Commonwealth community come under one roof to discuss lawmaking in all its facets.

Parliament spokesperson Moloto Motapo says parliaments from Commonwealth countries have a particularly important role to play in the current global political space.

This conference is taking place within the context of ongoing geopolitical tensions, climate change, technological disruptions.

There is a critical and important role of parliaments of the Commonwealth as well as parliamentarians in terms of their oversight function, their law making function and in terms of their role in facilitating the participation of the public of those nations in the decision making processes of those parliaments.

On reports that the Nigerian delegation has decided not to attend the conference Mutapu says as a host nation they've not been informed.

According to media reports, the Nigerian National Assembly has suspended all official visits to South Africa, including the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference, following two recent separate unnatural deaths of Nigerian citizens in South Africa.

Mutapu says Parliament expects that all invited parliaments will be participating.
