That is paired that night with Shinjuku Midnight Story Man and Woman, which is a very different film.

It's a trans comedy by Ohara, and it has Hidemi Hara, who's an early Nikkatsu actress, but also has Lamy Rose, who's a – I think she was an established trans performer before.

in tokyo and she only did two films uh for this director but the fun thing is that this was screened by dakota and chris in la and i think whammy analog and their english subs were created specifically for that screening by this subtitle named jingy manami and i just wanted to give both of them credit because now it has legs more people are going to see this movie it's a really really good like queer representation movie.

For that era, it's shockingly not offensive.

The violence is towards the men in that movie, to be completely honest.

That bloodshed is of men.

But it's a Marquis de Sade-inspired story, and it has two more early Nikkatsu women who I love, Hiroko Isayama and Rie Nakagawa.

They're both amazing in it.

Yeah.

And he was, you know, a very famous Roman porno director at Nikkatsu, and, uh, ended his career doing, uh, there with, uh, with Angel Guts Roman porno films.

But, you know, to be honest, I, I know that Roman porno is making a bit of a splash nowadays.

I think 88 films through Jasper is releasing tons of them.

He started his own production company after, uh, he did, um, the Angel Guts films and left, uh, sort of Nikkatsu, and he started it with this sort of like, uh, sort of docudrama.

And that is a dude called Tama Uchida.

So he started making films in 1929 for Nikkatsu, who we'll talk a little bit more a little bit later.

But then he left Nakatsu in 1941 and then lived in China until 1953.

So it's kind of the reason why we haven't really talked about him because that period where he was making films, I think basically everything is lost as far as I could tell.

They were just doing other things, including watching TV.

But even that, they were just not going to the movies to watch an Otsu drama, right? And so they were trying to figure out how to capture their attention.

And Nikkatsu Studios, which is what Suzuki was working at the time, created this sort of talent competition And they put out a call for what they're basically a boy band.

They were calling them the Diamond Guys.

And for a little while, there were six big studios.

So, Daiei, Nikatsu, Shochiku, Toei, Toho, and Shintoho.

Fizzled out pretty quick, though.

Shintoho was also the fearsome attack of the flying saucers.

That's probably, in the United States, what I guess most people would know.

I love Naked City so much.

Yeah, I feel like this was a great double feature because you got to see one that was made, like, more after the Violent Pink era with Naked City, and this one feels... a little bit more in line with, like, the Nikkatsu Roman porno stuff from the 70s.
