So we've come over from England, and, um, we've come to interview our amazing Japanese guest.
Ravi AbbottHOST
52:34
So, um, first we're gonna get started, um, going straight into, uh, Nihon Falcom, because, um, yesterday, we talked a lot about his history with music, uh, learning the piano when he was very young.
Ravi AbbottHOST
52:49
And, um, we'll get straight into the Sega stuff 'cause we've got a lot to cover.
Ravi AbbottHOST
52:53
So, um, can we get a big hand first for Yuzo? [audience applauding] Thank you.
Yuzo KoshiroGUEST
53:00
Thank you.
Ravi AbbottHOST
53:03
So, uh, I was wondering about the games that you worked on near the start of your career at Nihon Falcom.
Ravi AbbottHOST
53:09
Um, some games that should become absolutely legendary and hugely important in Japanese gaming, uh, including games such as, uh, Ys and, um, Dragon Slayer.
Ravi AbbottHOST
53:18
So I was just wondering, working at Nihon Falcom, did this teach you the fundamentals of video game music? Um, obviously, we mentioned yesterday you were a very accomplished musician already at that point, but did that help you transition into creating music for video games?
Kurt KalataGUEST
7:06
... um, plus Castlevania.
Kurt KalataGUEST
7:07
And, like, anything by Falcom has amazing music.
Kurt KalataGUEST
7:11
Uh, not only the original soundtracks, but the many, many arranged soundtracks that have come out over the years.
Kurt KalataGUEST
7:16
Uh, I'm gonna say probably Castlevania just because there's many more Castlevania games.

Um, but yeah, what else, um, do you have that you'd like to share? The, the platform is yours to kinda talk about whatever you'd like.
Kurt KalataGUEST
29:49
So about last month or so we put out two books.
Kurt KalataGUEST
29:51
One is focusing on Ys and some other action RPGs from Falcom.
Kurt KalataGUEST

The official title is Hardcore Gaming 101 Presents Ys and Other Falcom Classics.

Like, they're the ones that, like, joined Falcom and not, like, catching on fire when they tried to make Windows stuff after sticking to the PC-98.
Chris Zombie PieHOST
18:31
Like, you're the ones that, you know, weren't completely kicked in the shins when the PS3 came out.
Chris Zombie PieHOST
18:39
Yeah, because Two Heart.
SyrenneHOST
36:41
...
SyrenneHOST
36:41
the reason is, f- f- Nihon Falcom releases one game a year.
SyrenneHOST
36:46
Uh, they have, they, they operate on a 10-month dev cycle for every game, and these games are, uh, double A $60 games that are made with a 50-person team.
SyrenneHOST
36:59
They alternate sometimes between Trails and Ys games, and Ys games are we are going to make large-ass areas with, uh, exploration and combat and a less focus on story, and Trails games are v- you are coming to this first and foremost for the story.
TenHOST
12:30
But, uh, I did see on here, uh, this game was released in 1991 or 1992, depending on which source you find.
TenHOST
12:39
Uh, Ys III was developed for the TurboGrafx-16 CD by Nihon Falcom or Alpha System and published by NEC Home Electronics North America.
TenHOST
12:48
So you've been playing these games for a long time, right?
Flannel CatHOST
12:53
Well, I played an Ys game for the first time in, I think, 2000 or 2001.
Cameron HawkinsHOST
42:31
So for those that don't know, there was a bit of a weird history with the original releases of Xero and Azure.
Cameron HawkinsHOST
42:39
So on the PS4 version, that is a straight port, like it is straight from Falcom, like straight port to the PS4, while the Switch version was more or less a remaster.
Cameron HawkinsHOST
42:51
Like there was a developer that touched things up, that made it look visually better, all of that type of thing.
Cameron HawkinsHOST
43:01
in this re-release that they're doing or this port of sorts to uh ps5 and switch to um they come with the option to choose between or the ps5 does the ps5 version has the option for you to choose between the original like the ps4 version or the ps5 with which is basically the switch

Trails in the Sky is kind of like an old school...
Chris JohnstonHOST
59:23
I mean, it's a Falcom game, which is their old school RPG makers.
Chris JohnstonHOST
59:32
And it reminds me a lot of just 16-bit RPGs in a lot of ways.
Chris JohnstonHOST
59:39
The presentation is obviously very modern.
Lex LuddyGUEST
26:12
I think if Sony winds up in a situation where they are showing off a PS6 and they have to put a face out there to tell us what a PS6 is, then that's where the rubber hits the road and this becomes a lot more interesting.
Lex LuddyGUEST
26:23
Um, also good on the, like, Falcom and Nippon people that they seem very upfront in interviews when you hear them talk to people.
Lex LuddyGUEST
26:31
They seem very happy to explain both their local industry and the industry for getting these games out in other parts of the world, and they seem quite invested in, like, making sure that those games continue to grow and spread outside of just Japan.
Lex LuddyGUEST
26:47
Um, and so, like, a- answering tho- those questions quite honestly instead of saying, like, "We have a great relationship with Sony and we're not talking about this," good on them.

a cool moment that i think adds like an interesting urgency to that story and and gives you that sense of like there are multiple forces at work in this plot and i need to like be be wary of that be scared there's there you know there's some threats in this world and there's some things going on so back to trails we could probably talk all day about it but we probably got to wrap up this main show segment so i'm gonna i will broadly say we did get some questions i think uh this is always the thing that comes up uh where should you start with trails what order should you play it in i feel like maybe this is why Nihon Falcom really wanted to do this in the first place.
