There's a lot of... music software makers in Germany in general, but also in Berlin.

We have Ableton Native Instruments.

I had a guy here last week who makes a VJ tool, and we were actually jamming with it together.

So there's a lot of people here.

Well, so it's obviously not that big as the audio programmers, but well, I mean, I was doing the podcast, right? And more and more people were telling me, hey, this is, you know, maybe we can do something more, right? I mean, we don't have to just like meet online and listen to the podcast.

At the time, Gustav Elmer, a colleague from Berlin, he's like a former director of design at Native Instruments.

Later, he was a CPO of machine, electronic music machines, you know, so also like a very experienced guy.

Hey, hey, maybe we can organize a meetup.

I wanted to say that, you know, not only they are not the richest people in the world, but also, and I saw this even from, you know, in some blogs and discussions on LinkedIn, et cetera, you know, some kind of proof that a lot of people don't even understand, you know, like, or they have expectations from the companies that are completely unrealistic because they don't understand that this is not the grid that drives them, but actually this is, you know, like a really, you know, like a feeling of like a willingness to deliver the best quality product they want.

And people say, how can somebody charge money for product updates? And I say, I mean, who is going to make it? You know, you want to pay your employees, right? You want to pay your contractors, you know, so...

what are you expecting you know people to simply do it for i mean i would love to do it for free and i remember like some simon cross the you know former cpo of native instruments he says well i mean there are people so passionate in the company that they can build you know like a ship products for free and they i mean they were just building something and they never charged clients you know so i had to come and step in say hey guys we need to charge for this right because you know you know you know, people need to get the salaries, right? I mean, every single month, right? I mean, obviously we know what happened, you know, with the company later.

But I mean, yeah, I mean, this is difficult because if you're, and I mean, probably this is also in the other industries, but I mean, if you combine people who are not the richest in the world and they are like a little awareness of actually how products are made, it can get really difficult to, you know, and then you have this, And again, I don't want to defend everyone.

And the only reason I did it is because you can subscribe to this software package.

That sound library is fucking crazy.

Dude, I've been playing with Absinthe and Reactor, and I'm like, holy shit.

There's so much in there, and you can tweak it all.

Maybe it's not where it will go.

Native Instruments did something quite interesting about four years ago, and they brought out this unit which didn't have any jog wheels on it, and it was just squares.

I remember that.

Do you remember that?

Yeah.

Right, 'cause, um, Crust came down to the studio, and we, we recorded the, um, the promo video with Crust and for Native Instruments on that unit.

Mm.

You know, so they, they tried to do that, but for some reason, removing a jog wheel made it flop.

Um, well, there's a, a, a strong distinction between Gerhard and me in this regard.

Uh, Gerhard came from an entrepreneur's background in his family, and Gerhard used to work for Native Instruments when it was still basically Stefan Schmidt's living room.

And there he met another developer, Bernd Roggendorf, and they both decided that the ultimate goal must be creating their own company.

And Bernd and Gerhard and a financial person, Jan Bohl, were the people who are actually the legal founders of the company Ableton.

You use a lot of Native Instruments synths.

For Adventure, you used, uh, the patches, you, you ma- you built the patches using Absynth.

Now, you already said that you learned synthesis at, uh, Berkeley.
